Inspired by cpaswr: Assume that "None of the Above" is added as a non-binding option to ballots. Also assume that "None of the Above" "wins" an election. Would this make politicians more accountable to voters?

I like it. It provides an option for people who may not vote. Low voter turnout doesn't dissuade bad politicians, it makes it easier. At least this gives dissatisfied people a voice. A better idea than mandatory voting.

Assuming, a win for 'none of the above' means that that new candidates have to be found, I think it might help candidates focus on issues important to voters.

Precisely. But I doubt that is how it would work.

I hope it would send a message.

Only if " none of the above wins" and the losers are eliminated for a couple years minimum from running for that office.

Yes, but shooting politicians out of a circus cannon sends an even stronger message.

Good idea, but we don't have nearly enough circus cannons to go around!

Possibly. It would certainly send a message that we are not happy with their performance as a whole.

What should happen if "none of the above" wins?

Depending on where none of the above occurs, maybe you just leave the seat open until the next election. City Council, congressional delegation, even senators could all be left vacant until the next election without a major problem. IMO

I know Nevada has this option. I'm not sure what happens when none of the above wins...

They wouldn't be able to claim a "mandate" from the people in a case like that.

Looks not much different from our current none of the above aka low voter turnout.

It's a little bit different. Not voting can be interpreted as apathy.

I like the idea. Also, not voting at all sends a message. It's more effective if combined with a letter to the politicians telling them why they didn't get your support.

Not voting at all sends the message that your opinions are irrelevant.

If you vote for the lesser of two evils then it sends the message that you prefer evil in moderation.

I don't know, GA.

Not voting is awful. It's so unpatriotic to just sit back and not vote. So many people fought so hard for the right to vote.

There's nothing virtuous in casting an uninformed vote. Doing so makes a mockery of the sacrifice given for the right to vote. Voting for the sake of voting is dumb. It's only patriotic if the vote is cast for a worthy candidate.

Okie, if you're voting for a human, you're voting for the lesser of two evils.
