You have a 12 year old grandson. He has self confidence issues. Is telling him, even if it is meant jokingly, that he in fact will "be a 40 year old virgin." when he comments that he is worried about the possibility of that a smart decision?

I hate when people act like its ok to say something offensive to someone because "it's a joke" except that they're half serious. In any case, it's hard to tell if they're joking and it's not funny so people should just keep that stuff to themselves.

It's better to be a 40 year old virgin than have sex with a different woman every night.

Is that really answering the question though?

He shouldn't be worried about that. Definitely not at 14

I don't like the idea of making a joke at someone's expense when they're clearly uncomfortable with the subject matter.

It's neither smart nor "unsmart." It's just comical, as I'm sure it was meant.

Does something being comical, or being meant as such, prevent something from being a smart (or not a smart) statement to make?

No, it's a separate thing altogether whether something is comical.

Neither smart or dumb, but maybe a little insensitive if the kid is truly worried about it. It would be hard to take that concern seriously from a 12 year old though, as only a few years ago the kid was still wearing diapers and eating Gerber's.

No thats mean. I also am not down with this trend i see of insulting men by calling them virgins. Its like the male version of slut shaming. Its mean already but would be worse in this case.

Absolutely not. I point out all of his good qualities. What kind of a grandma would do that! Shame on her she needs to take grandma timeout

No; it's cruel and hurts the child.

Yep. I know that consciously I'm over it, though I hope it isn't lingering subconsciously. It took a long time though, even after he apologized

I'm sorry Matt. I'm sure it did and the subconscious can be as cruel as it can be kind.

Children's concerns should be taken seriously not mocked. Even if they're funny to adults.

I have to admit, sometimes I laugh at the things Giovanni gets worried about. But I still hug him and address his fears positively. :)
