A school arranged to have the pledge of allegiance spoken in different languages to show "that those who speak a language other than English still pledge to salute this great country." People responded angrily when Arabic was used. Was the response

Did they actually refer to God as Allah? If so then I believe they are referencing one specific religion. The word "God" encompasses all religions.

Actually, they're not. The word Allah means God in Arabic, predates Islam, and is sometimes used by Arab-speaking Christians. If the Pledge is translated into another language, it would seem proper to use the word for God in that language.

It could have been done in both English and the other language. then I bet there would have been far fewer complaints if any. It wouldn't have gone over well in many other countries either. Why are so many so fast to call racism?

If you're in this country, you better speak English. I don't care if you're Mexican, Arabian, Chinese, or whatever, just speak the language!

It should be spoken in English since that is our main language

I'm pretty sure state law doesn't allow for translations. It also requires a full minute of silence, not a moment - which most Texas schools implement.

Yup. Translations are not acceptable substitutes.

Schools aren't even making the students say the pledge anymore in my area.

I believe that if you're going to live in America, you should learn English. I believe we should speak ENGLISH when we pledge our AMERICAN flag.

Absolutely nothing from that culture must be permitted in this country. Even if we welcome the people, it must be made clear that they will leave their culture behind.

I think it was a marvelous experiment in inclusion. Had I been running the show I would have done it in a different language every day for a year...but it would have either been followed by or preceeded by the English version.

I understand the response, but it was not appropriate. Do you know how many Arabic people worked with our military, and because they are not US citizens, are still stuck in the Middle East, now under constant threat from their neighbors?

The response was "understandable." Saying the pledge in Japanese during WW2 would have similarly been like the proverbial turd in the punch bowl.

Our language is English the pledge should not be tarnished by saying it in any other language. That was the way it was intended.

It's not that easy, it can take years to learn a language, this way, new immigrants (who probably couldn't learn English in their homeland) can understand the seriousness of the oral contract that pledging allegiance to the US of A is.

I wonder if we would have heard the same uproar if the pledge had been done in Latin (as in Greek) by the Latin language class. Read the article folks. No one was trying to impose Arabic as the national language. Good grief!

I have no clue why the school apologized. The situation is especially awful because Arabic isn't even an official language in Afghanistan. The ignorance is shaming.

That is tough. I can see why the public would have a problem with it. But I can also see the Why Muslims wanted the pledge to fit them as well. I'm freightend (call it being paranoid if you will) that the community (not necessarily this one), will

Take action. Either by protesting, or someone making a STATEMENT by a gun or other weapon. This is a horrible idea, but as we've learned in the world, anything can happen. Especially when anger and pride is involved.

Haven't you heard? It's only freedom of speech if you are threatening to lynch the prez or saying if we don't get the results we want at the polls we will get it with our guns. (i.e. To hell with how the majority votes.)

Prejudiced and ignorant.

The only thing the school did wrong was the apology. Instead of apologizing, they should have worked at educating the ignorant public.

Well Arabic is said to be one of the more harsher sounding languages. Like German! If German also ruffled some feathers they need to pick up a Romance Language stat!! If no, they need to head to a diversity workshop.

I don't see what the big deal is. It's not like it's intended to be a policy change. And the Arabic word for "god" is "Allah." They don't say "God." It's like they're saying "under Vishnu." The real crime is forcing kids to recite a flag prayer.

No, but it was a much different time. We were putting Japanese Americans in interment camps. Our own people. Blacks were segregated. Women had just earned the right to vote 20 years earlier. I don't think that's comparable, but I could be wrong
