So this may be the closest to a political poll I have ever posted...but Obama mentioned the idea of mandatory voting. Thoughts?

Well, he's making people buy insurance, he wants to make people vote. I think he's a tyrant plain and simple.

One year, nine months and thirty days before we get to kick him and his tyranny through the door.

In a literal sense, terrible idea.

I don't think he means it. I think he is speaking to the gerrymandering thats happening.

Really bad idea. It's doubtful that people who have to be forced to vote would put in the time to properly research their choices, and we'd all have to put up with the consequences.

Mandatory voting is a bad idea. However, it should be easy enough that everyone who wants to vote to be able to vote.

Only if I can write in a candidate. I don't vote lesser of two evils.

Also there needs to be a way to inform voters all appropriate and relevant info so they can make an intelligent choice. Consider all the BS we're fed that are lies.

The current system isn't perfect so it may be an improvement. It would be an interesting experiment and a disaster for conservatives/ Neoliberals.

I don't like it. Other countries do it, they're fine, but I think people should vote for something other than fear of punishment.

Way to many people who don't know or care to find out what's going on. Do you really want to force these uninformed people to vote?

Our country was founded on the idea of giving a voice to the people.

It's insulting that people don't go out of their way to exercise that right.

None Of The Above should be an option on all ballots.

Mandatory voting would be a very bad thing. I would forever write in myself for every vote if it came to that.

What would the punishment for not voting be?

Probably a fine...the article doesn't really say but it hints at the fact that in some countries it is punishable by imprisonment.

Bad idea. Very bad. It would be great if we had a society where every citizen felt it was their *responsibility* to cast an informed vote, and acted responsibly, but we don't, and making it mandatory won't make it so, or make the votes informed.

Too many idiots vote already. Forcing people to vote would increase the idiot pool and then cost $ as we would have to accommodate them somehow. No way.

Making it mandatory for us to vote is taking away our freedom. We are free to choose if we vote on certain topics or for candidates. Compelling citizens to vote is wrong, but seems difficult to punish also.

I disagree. Mandating people to vote when they could care less what the issues are and know nothing about the candidates is not a good idea. We get enough bad elected officials already.

True...not to mention as long as they have the write-in section, people would just be writing Mickey Mouse or Donald Duck just so they don't have to pay a fine. Or worse, voting for the "cuter" candidate. It'd greatly skew the results.

This is why I'm not even a registered voter. I honestly don't pay attention to candidates, their platforms, or anything else. I couldn't even really tell you who exactly is running. Why should I vote if I don't even know what is going on?

Honestly I don't get into politics as many of you know...but this is just absolutely ridiculous to me. I doubt it will ever happen but just the fact that he has the idea makes me want him out of office even sooner.

I don't get into politics like a lot of people do either. I have my opinion on things, sure, but I don't care to debate with people over it. I joined the app because my husband was here and he always talked about BS stuff going on. I eventually have

made friends and have formed my own opinions. That's pretty much what I use it for. I really didn't have an opinion on anything until this app (and husband).
