Happy Freedom of Information Day! On this day, the Obama White House has announced that it will exempt itself from all Freedom of Information Act requests. Do you agree with this decision?

And I didn't approve of Bush doing it either.

...financials due to my wanting to keep that info private. Also the federal government will no longer receive any more demographic info during the census: my age, gender, ethnicity, home and any other private info will rain private--because it's...

...PRIVATE. Public office including the office of the president (which mr Obama simply occupies at our discretion) is not private. Get this mofo out ASAP!

Don't pay attention to the man behind the curtain. The Office of the President is not exempt from FOIA because it is a PUBLIC OFFICE! and it's not his call to make this exemption. So here is my response: I will no longer disclose my personal...

Why is everybody surprised that a president promised transperancy and did not deliver on that transparency? I don't care what party you support, this is every administration, and although I don't agree with it, this isn't unique to President Obama.

It's another one of the crap things that started under GW that Obama promised to fix. As if he ever had any intention of doing the right thing.

I agree with this. We know that the prez is a political office and that politics is therefore an integral part of everything it does. I've never believed that we have a right to see how their sausage is made. Now the results (regulations, policy

policy, law, etc) are all subject to the highest scrutiny, but I don't expect to be able to see email between two staffers discussing whether or not the prez should attend the Netanyahu speech.

If you read the article Bush did it to and it's pretty standard policy. Court rulings finding that this office is above the transparency law due to the sensitive info. They hold

Butm but but he said his administration will be the most transparent ever! Is he confused with opaque?

As the news article notes, presidents voluntarily complied with FOIA for 30 years, so noncompliance is certainly a departure from "standard practice."

It is a departure, but I'm ok with it per my explanation above. It is, to ron's point, hypocritical to the "most transparent" claim.

Your living in a new era with new threats that don't have a flag or allegiance so just telling people whatever they want to hear probably is not a good idea I see the reasoning. You can't take stuff at face value anymore, look at both sides.

I seriously doubt that Obama would do anything to protect Hillary.

You've misstated the decision: it only applies to one office within the White House. But still, it's hella shady. "Most transparent administration" my ass.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe the Office of Administration maintains all White House records.

It's actually seven offices.

Also, note that all other offices are already exempt from FOIA before this decision.

"Unlike other offices within the White House, which were always exempt from the Freedom of Information Act, the Office of Administration..."

Not cool. Can we now officially give up the transparency charade from these clowns? Just because you claim something doesn't make it true. Unreal.

No, that's a horrible decision by the least transparent administration in US history. The irony only further irritates the wound.

The White House is bypassing the public comment period too. Beginning tomorrow, White House records will be available only under the Presidential Records Act (a five-year delay).
