"Son, I want you to hold on to & stand violently for your ideals all the way up until it's time to be practical. Then do what is best & will bring some change. For to forget practicality & die w/your ideals makes you a fanatic, not a revolutionary."

I think it's better to be practical from the beginning.

I believe that's good advice in general. There was a student at my college who stood in front of a tank that was ready to demolish a house in a country whose name I can't remember. It ran over her and killed her. My thought was, what a waste of life.

It depends how close to the core the particular ideal is. There is no point in being practical if it means losing myself. The right way to be practical is to do it in a way that does not sacrifice your sense of self-worth.

Good point. I wonder if that's implied in there, though. The caution appears to be more for someone who would fail to compromise than for one whose tendency is to fold.

It's the kind of thing that makes generalizations difficult, but an easy one might be would you cheat just to pass a test or get a job? Practical, maybe, but it's not happening. I'd flunk first, or look for other work.
