Justice Sonia Sotomayor says the Supreme Court needs greater diversity: fewer academics, fewer Ivy Leaguers, fewer Northeasterners, more Protestants, and more Muslims. How do you think her changes would affect the Court ideologically?

...and yet her suggestions (albeit in ernest from her perspective) are irrelevant if judging from the perspective of equality under the law and the Constitution.

Just pick the most qualified person diversity should have nothing to do with it.

I think most, if not all the Supreme Court Justices are Catholic. Can't really even imagine what she's suggesting--"less academics!'" Hmm... Craziness. It'd probably stay center right or no longer follow a straight line if changes were made.

there are currently three Jewish Supreme Court justices: Breyer, Ginsburg, and Kagan.

I remember now. The religious make up of SCOTUS is funny. Not that any of it makes a difference in their decisions, but it does make the court seem kinda fun and quirky. Idk, they don't let cameras in so I'm just imagining. 💁💭🔮🐉😜

diversity shouldn't be the priority. whoever is the most qualified is who earns the position.

I do not care how SCOTUS wants to staff itself we'll decide.

Amen. Yes miss "Wise Latina" keep your version of "diversity" to yourself. We won't allow you to shove your so called "diversity" down the throats of our country. What we need on SCOTUS is the BEST and BRIGHTEST legal minds.

There is no room for afirmative action on the SCOTUS.

Interesting that she would say that. I would not have expected that.

There ar more atheists than Muslims in the US, same with Buddhists. But fuck them, right? Islam is a hot button issue right now, so we need more Muslims in there

More conservative but more representative and realistic.

The SCOTUS is not supposed to be demographically representative of the population.

I don't disagree, I'm just answering the question.

Great...now diversity is the reason to choose Jurists? Give me a break. Affirmative action at its worst. Sotomayor needs her socialist head examined.

Fewer academics and more protestants will tendentially result in a more conservative court.

fewer academics: can give anything
fewer Ivy Leaguers: likely more conservative
fewer Northeasterners: likely more conservative
more Protestants: more conservative
more Muslims: who knows

The one about Muslim is interesting. How many Muslims are there in this country, I cannot see there are enough to give even one seat.

Muslims make up less than 1% of the population.

Though, Jews, who make up 2% of the population, control three of the nine seats.

I guess that's wrong in her opinion too. Did you read the comments under the article, a couple good points there too.

No, I haven't read the comments section yet. I'll do that now.

Academics and muslims are generally 50/50 politically, but the Ivy League and northeast are heavy liberal, and Protestants are strongly conservative. This move would be decisively conservative

It sounds as if she wants to add more conservatives to the Court: a Protestant from the South who graduated from a public university and eschews academia.
