I went to my first gay bar tonight. Have you ever been to a gay bar?
I've only been to a bar once in my 37 years on this planet.
I have a few times. I was kind of disappointed. No one hit on anyone and no crazy sites (unless you're uncomfortable with drag queens).
It's nothing like the media or movies made me expect. It was just like any other bar :/
Now it's the only gay bar in north Alabama (there used to be 3)
Well Rot, I can tell you that my friend and I were hit on by a young very drunk guy all night. He gets an A for effort even if he never learned our names. Like I said. Way drunk. I'm pretty sure I was spotted as straight within 5 feet of the door.
Good for you rond... Experience is what life is for. We can't for solid opinions or make good decisions in a vacuum...
Yes, there is one near here that my SO and I go to sometimes. The bartender is so hilarious. A flaming older guy. The drag queens there were better looking about 7 years ago - don't know what happened.
It was gay night, but not strictly a gay bar
No thanks. What's the point in that
I answered this below.
That doesn't work for me. The only reason to go to a bar is for drinks and the ladies.
Well Tom, I refer you back to my poll of which church would Jesus go to? If I am to reach out to that community for Christ, I can't do it from a pew.
Besides, it was a great experience. Lots of memories made.
Now we all know how you got Ebola. :)
LOL. Back then there was no Ebola or AIDS.
I don't get it, how exactly did he get ebola?
I do t know if there are any near me. If there is, the closest would be about half an hour away.
I hereby hand this poll over to Glockman.....
Not yet, even though there are many near my home. I'm also not much of a bar person.
I've been to a gay bar about 10,000 times. 😊
Political, in time you will go to one.
I rather slip the dollar into a woman's bra than a man's pants. That's just me though. 😂😂
Pirate, I'd love to go to a gay bar with you. I feel like we'd have a good time. 😀🎉🎶🎵
We sure would. I know the hot spots!
Haha! I can always count on SOH to get a good laugh.
😀😀😀 *fist pumps like the Jersey girl that I am*
Political, I am a straight, married, baptist and have maybe been to 5 bars in my life. I had a blast.
What happened there?
Drag queens lip synching to pop hits. Every stereotype you can imagine. Lots of alcohol (obviously). I didn't see any men kiss (though I'm sure it happened). They weren't groping each other. Imagine a bar where there are no stand offish people.
Everyone is friendly. The bathroom is unisex.
It seems to me that they have to subdue their lives in so many ways, in the gay district, they are allowed to let their guard down.
Ronderman, that is a very good description. I am much more myself around gay people than straight people. At a gay bar we just be who we are. It's very sad some straight people don't get it. More people should go. If they don't go, they don't know.
Honestly, I wouldn't trust most southern baptists to go into one. I am fortunate that I have a guy that I love and respect almost as a brother that was willing to take me and "protect" me:). I think I did more protecting him.
Did you think somebody was going to get you. Hahaha. If I went to a straight bar I wonder if the women would get me. I was actually afraid the first time I went to a gay bar. It's the unknown factor that is mysterious. It's just people having fun.
My mom (who is straight) went into a lesbian bar in the late 70s with a few of her friends who were lesbians. She got hit on so many times. Her friends had to keep telling the women, "Sorry, she's straight!" My mom had a great time.
This is one of my favorite gay bars. MS Czar, let's go! It's one of if not the oldest gay bar in America. I love to go into the French Quarter, so much fun to be had in New Orleans. It's only about a 2 1/2 hour drive from my house so I go often.
No cut off time in the Quarter. 24 hour bars.
Looks like fun, Pirate!
If anyone does the virtual tour you will love the view of the Quarter from the upstairs balcony.
I would love to live in the Quarter too btw but it is very very expensive.
Why on God's green Earth would you go to a gay bar?
Oh political, you know that's where we met up
Was it the rainbow cafe?
Don't pretend you don't remember
You should stop fantasizing. 😯
I was with my sister's room mate (a gay man). I told him that I've never been to one and he asked me to go with him. Why wouldn't I go? It was a new experience.
I went after work with coworkers from time to time. We took turns picking the bar, and I had a handful of gay staff members who picked gay bars.
The crowd on random weekdays after work was very tame, pretty much indistinguishable from a straight bar
And people call you homophobic.....
I'll drink beer pretty much anywhere.
You are definitely a Catholic.
Irish Catholic- I was pretty much required by natural law to go the bar with my staff
....as Milk pours himself a cold one.
That's ridiculous. You don't pour your own beer at good bars.
Did you order a rainbow drink?
They were very rigorous about making sure I didn't get any gay germs. They gave me a gay vaccine on the way in, and they only served my beer in straight glasses.
The vaccine was in the form of little pills that looked and tasted like peanuts. But they assured me that eating them would protect me against catching a case of "the gays" from any of the regulars.
That means that the bar believes being gay is a virus or disease.
In all honesty, it really isn't that big of a deal. They were just bars. If I didn't know they were gay bars ahead of time I probably wouldn't have picked up on it on my own.
This was VERY different from a straight bar. It was drag queen night😂😂😂.
I bet the ones I've been to were much different on weekdays during happy hour than they were on weekends, too.
Once or twice. Bars in general don't interest me much. Were you near Dupont Circle?
Susan, your knowledge knows no end.
Really? Dupont Circle? Remember I lived in DC for a while (1974). I lived less than a mile from there, & it was on my route home from several places. And I lived with a gay man.
Yep. We were at Cobolt. Had a great time.
I don't know what bars were around when I lived there, even. Not sure I went to any there. I saw above that you said it was drag queen night. I went to one of those in San Francisco (before DC), but ended up living with folks who were
even more outrageous, & put on a lot of shows in SF.
I wanted to choose fabulous as my answer, but I have not. 😆
