Though positive things *eventually* were learned, I would not classify it as a benefit, as if it was good that the victims and the world went through that.
The only thing I can think of is it being a lesson on history how sick and demented humanity can be. Thinking about it makes my soul hurt.

Agreed. This is hard to admit. Just as it's hard to admit that the crazy crap that psych wards used to get away with has also lead to advances. Not a good bit of history to reflect on. Sigh...
