Roommates, Beth and Greg, find a rat in the kitchen. Greg tells her to leave it and he'll catch it after work. Wanting it gone, Beth feeds it rat poison. Mortified, Greg is pressing charges for animal cruelty. You're the judge, is Beth guilty?

Of course not, the real question is

Is this grounds for Greg to break his lease 8 months early?

And Was Greg close to building a better rat trap?
I'm afraid the world will never know

Can Greg even press charges in behalf of the animal? He doesn't really have standing in this case. Secondly, why would anyone even take this case?

I can't press charges against my neighbor just because he robbed Radio Shack. I have to be harmed in order for me to press charges. I could report him to the authorities, but I can't press charges.

Greg is an idiot. Beth should have done something quicker to exterminate the rat.

A guy here set his house on fire because his wife was cheating on him, anyway, one of his charges was animal cruelty because there was a goldfish in the house at the time, kinda sparked the whole question. I went with rat because I suspect not too

Many people give a crap about rats, just like fish, and I had a rough time coming up with a scenario involving a stray fish

Not as long as she used the product according to regulations governing its use. She should have used a Rat Zapper, they're much cooler and cleaner.

If, at this moment, highly advanced alien lifeforms were debating whether or not it would be cruelty for them to poison us humans to death because we're in their way, how would we want them to vote?

I think it would be tolerated as long as they only kill the ugly, dirty, or diseased

I guess it's kind of like how the murders of pregnant women count as double homicides - how this question differs from the last question. If someone wants the baby or animal and it's killed, press those charges. Otherwise, let it go, doesn't matter.

I think the difference has to do with safety hazards and such. Most pet rats are bred and domesticated as pets, and usually don't carry disease like wild rats. Its the difference between killing your neighbors golden retriever and a wild dog that

Do you suppose there is mindset among us making it more about the animal than about its domesticated status?

Yea I do, though I couldn't put my finger on exactly why, besides the safety hazard I already mentioned and maybe familiarity. I guess it depends on your views. To some people rats are disgusting and a rat is a rat, pet or not, and killing vermin

b4mytime Orange County, CA

Homeless dogs can be a safety hazard too, but does that mean we can go around poisoning them to death? Come on now...there are other precautions one can take other than ending a life unnecessarily. I don't care if it's a rat or whatever. Be kind.

146787456777 .......
03/13/15 7:38 am

Again that speaks to how people view animals. Most people I think view animal lives with different amounts of worth. Not many people would be upset about the extermination of a wild rat population; maybe due to the rat's reputation for carrying

Disease. I'm not advocating that its ok to kill animals in general for being a nuisance or even inherently dangerous, but sometimes we have to weigh the costs. Rats breed very quickly and carry disease. Its a major health hazard to let them spread

Yes, cruelty doesn't depend on if it's a pet. It may, from a human pov, depend on whether it's a higher animal. Where do we draw a line?

A rat is an intelligent animal up to par with a dog. Would you also exterminate unwanted puppies? I *may* agree to exterminate termites or other invertebrates, but rats - no.

03/13/15 5:42 am

Praet, this is the reason that this whole thing confuses me. Killing a rat only seems cruel if it belongs to someone, but we don't apply that same reasoning to cats

Praetorianus Fair enough.
03/13/15 5:46 am

There are quite a few people here who want to kill our stray cats and feral chickens. It shows many think of animals as property. If it belongs to nobody, it's free to kill. Wonder if an abandoned baby also is.

RoDe Latinus wordsus
03/13/15 8:27 am

They better not touch those chickens. But in a way aren't we already exterminating unwanted dogs and cats? Shelters can't pay from donated funds to keep animals alive in perpetuity, many put former pets down.
