A lot of people have an alcoholic drink to relax. Can alcohol be considered a stress management therapy?
Depends on how your body reacts to it. For me, definitely.
It's called self medicating.
Alcohol is a medicine in Traditional Chinese Medicine. It's used to clear dampness, and circulate qi, not to get drunk or alleviate stress. 🏥🍺🍸🍹🍷🏥😲
You ever had some of that traditional white lightning they make? One cup would knock most people down.
A chemical induced one, sure.
Sure, why not. In moderation, alcohol is good for you.
Drinking does the opposite of relaxing to me. If makes me more talkative and energized.
For me the first drink or two is relaxing and claming, while anything past that is an over-talkative (I'm already a talkative person) mess
Whenever I need to get a lot of housework done in a short amount of time, I have 2 glasses of wine and watch out! I can get more done in 4 hours, than 2 days at normal pace. 😃👍
Ha my girlfriend is the same way. She cleans when she drinks.
It's not a healthy one.
Actually there are many studies that show drinking in moderation is healthy.
Well if most people drank every time they were stressed, it would not be in moderation.
Many people have a drink for relaxation and in moderation. Wine is a staple for dinner in many countries.
Having a drink relaxes some people but it isn't the healthiest way to manage stress. You're better off exercising, meditating, writing, etc.
It is called Self-medication
I'm relaxing with a nice bourbon right now.
Never had it. Sounds worth the try.
That would be alcoholism. 🍻 Cheers!
You don't think someone can drink in moderation and not be an alcoholic?
That would likely be ALCOHOL DEPENDENCE (DSM-IV-TR). Regularly drinking "socially" until "buzzed" (which is drunk) is not a pro-social coping mechanism & symptomatic of other disorders. I'm not judging, just saying what it is.
How different is it from other anti anxiety medications? Would you say those people are drug addicts? What if people don't have to have a drink, but just choose to because it relaxes them like a hot bath?
Of course it's self medication & actually may work better than most psychotropics. But then it's more abused than pharmaceuticals & causes 88k deaths/year/US (CDC), thus can be more dangerous.
There's nothing wrong with moderate drinking (but "buzzed" is drunk & leads to organ damage & early death). Anyone who regularly needs to drink to relax has deeper issues that should be discussed w/their therapist.
Except therapists are more messed up then the general population. Lol.
True, true. You have to watch out for the quacks 🐥
As a future therapist, I'll attested to that.
