Pronunciation: Ca-RIB-bean or Ca-rib-BEan?
Through all Those years of watching Pirates Of The Caribbean, I've gone Car-I-be-an.
I use them interchangeably
When I say "the Caribean sea" its RIB, but if i was saying "pirates of the Caribean" its BE.
If I add sea at the end I say it with a rib but without sea I say caribBEan.
Per the Oxford Dictionary:
There are two possible pronunciations of the word Caribbean. The first, more common in British English, puts the stress on the -be-, while the second, found in the US and the Caribbean itself, stresses the -rib-.
I can't believe no one's used Enya as an argument yet! "they say the sky high above is Car-i-BE-an blue". I also advocate pronouncing the "a" as an "ah" sound, but being from the South, I just get tired of spread vowel sounds.
the place is RIB. The disneyland ride is BE.
Both are correct. It depends on how it is used in a sentence. Noun or adjective.
I call it Ca-RIB-bean. I only call it the Ca-rib-BEan when I'm talking about the movies.
The natives say Care-a-BE-an.
So 53% of you are wrong. Wise up idiots.
You are right cwleduc.
I say it both ways, depending on how it's used. Ex1: that's the Carib BE an sea. Ex2: pirates of the ca RIB bean. I don't know why?
@holybabble: I am a Yankee (living in CO now,) I would say bill-uks-see... Wrong or right?
I love the caRIBbean! We always go there on family vacations!
As someone who was born and raised in the Caribbean, natives pronounce it ca-RIB-bean. It is descended from the name of the carib Indians. Europeans pronounce it the other way due to their accent and that's why the pronunciation is popular, including in the pirates of the caribbean franchise.
Very good question. Tuscany
Wish I was there
by itself i say caRIBean but in the movie i say pirates of the cariBEAN.
So, was there a typo in this question or something? Seems like it should say "Care-eh-BE-in" or "Kuh-RIB-ee-in"
It just depend on wat your saying like would u say let's watch the movie pirates of the ca-RIB-ean
my other job is a travel agent (can't get by on being a teacher alone!). it's ca RIB bean. I teach about the natives, the Caribs!
Sad that most people say it wrong.
I hate when yankees say the the name of my city wrong.
It's not bu-lox-ee ...... It's bu-lux-ee
never heard people say it as the first one, pirates of the car-rib-BEan is how the movie pronounced it xD
I say it both ways. It just depends what in talking about.
I sort of flip flop between the 2
Caribbean was home to the Carib natives- so Ca-rib should be the main sound in the word.
It's the first for normal talk, but the second one for pirates movies.
be sounds hickish to me.
@heatherluv Same here
I feel like I use both equally....depending on the context.
I saw caRIBbeanbut when I say Pirates of the caribbean i say caribBEan
I've cruised though the islands 3 times and visited most. Absolutely gorgeous
Rib. unless I'm talking about the ride at Disneyland.
@holybabble oh ok thanks! I'll try to remember that! :)
Yeah... What is the proper way to say it?
Is there a proper way to say it?
Their rum is good.
So is Jamaican Blue Mountain coffee.
Kuh - rib - e - uhn
I think it depends on where you live, based on the map the east and west say it differently
In the whole of everything, pronounce it anyway you want, beautiful area to visit.lol
I say it the correct way "Ca-rib-BEan"
Although many tourists and foreigners favor say "ka-RIB-e-an," this is a corruption of "ker-e-BE-an," the accurate pronunciation truest to how the natives pronounce their own name.
Ca-RIB-bean is the proper way to say it,named after the Carib indians,I have been there 6 times in the Navy and twice on cruise ships beautiful.
