Some say that the U.S. should continue to give foreign financial aid to allies because it helps developing countries and buys us greater influence than we would otherwise have. Agree?
Broke countries break countries.
The problem is that some numnuts in the white house writes checks to countries that hate us. Audit every country: friend or for? Iran, Af-Pak: you get squat! China: one more hacker and all our factories relocate the next day!
Foreign assistance is authorized by Congress and implemented by he executive branch.
We should try to overhaul our broken mental health system, actually work at our education system instead of throwing money at it and seeing if it works, paying off our credit (our deficit, to other countries) get a welfare to work program working.
etc, work to fix our borders. THAN we can work a deal...
Our foreign aid buys us no influence!! Most of those countries hate what we stand for.
Let's use that money to pay down America's credit card bill.
How are you gonna help other countries out when we're currently like trillions of dollars in debt? They're only increasing the national debt and sooner or later another country is gonna say pay up, which puts your own citizens in harms way.
Considering how negatively the rest of the world views America helping out is hopefully a good thing It also makes us look like a crackhead helping an alcoholic get clean because the problems we have and we're trying to help others
And Obummer was going to "transform the world opinion of America". Went down, didn't it.
It's just leverage. It maintains the alliance better..
On one side, we should always help and be the big brother. On the other, we are so darn broke we should probably get our own shit together...
Even the republican senators from Alabama support foreign aid. That says it all.
I think it's funny that there isn't a single cause that Dems don't want us to give tons of money to. Do you libs want to pay higher taxes? I know I don't so why should just a few people you are jealous of have to?
It's never a bad idea to give aid to people in need, but it is a bad idea to hand out money you don't really have.
There is only so much we can do. We DO so much already. Don't cut it off but cap it and give it out to the most deserving and in the most efficient form so that the help actually helps. Also STOP GIVING MONEY TO ISREAL. THEY ARE RICH....please!!!!!
never give cash. only infrastructure food and military protection.
We need the money ourselves ... Stop adding to the out of control deficit we already have
Foreign aid should only be to aid developing countries.
"Foreign aid" is just a clever term for the US to mask the constant proxy wars that they fight, usually in the name of Zionism.
We should stop enforcing the border between India and Pakistan and start focusing are efforts on our own unsecure border.
"Hey let's fork over taxpayer money to countries for free, instead of paying off our massive debt."
I'd like for my influence to be earned, not bought, thank you Feds.
Foreign aid should come with not strings but ROPES attached...equal or greater value in goods, services, land or mineral rights based on the amount of aid provided. I've always wondered why we don't own all of Kuwait and Iraq for what we gave them.
With all their oil, we should be THE driving force in OPEC. But what do we do? Fix infrastructure set up hospitals, schools, mosques, reestablished government and order, build back their cities, feed and water their citizens and for what?
Uh, so we can use the Suez Canal?
That's a start.
That's worth hundreds of billions a year in commerce for us. I'd say that's a good deal.
Because we turned Iraq to shit.
How do you turn shit to shit? Iraq was, is and always will be a shithole.
LOL. Are you on anything?
You're probably thinking of Afghanistan. Iraq has always been an ok place as far as development wise. Even in biblical times as Babylon.
I think we're over doing it
Not if we have to print money to do it
Until inflation smacks us in the face.
We've been doing it for decades. What do we have to show for it?
You people must be kidding me. You guys really think that cutting on foreign aid will help us with our debt problem? Why not cut military spending? magazine.good.is/infographics/infographic-u-s-military-spending-versus-foreign-aid#open
No, but it will stop the dysfunctional benevolence. Maybe spend that money to care for US Citizens.
Why not cut the biggest 2 expenses we have? 1) Social Security 2) Medicaid. Why skip the first two and jump to number three? I'm not being wholly serious, but I am trying to prove a point.
The influence and goodwill we buy only lasts until the first missed payday. The influence and goodwill we earn (not that we've earned any lately) lasts generations.
Key word is "allies", which mean it's goes both ways
I haven't seen it get us anything ever. Especially now.
Foreign aid is about .5% of our budget. I'm not concerned about it either way. Medicare, Medicaid, and defense are the ones that worry me.
Pardon me, it's .19% so yeah, not concerned.
I think the key word is "allies". Some of the countries we give money to don't act like allies.
It's irresponsible to give out money when you're in debt
I think its a viable strategy to gain influence and exposure. Although it doesnt seem to make sense when we are in debt. If i was personally in debt Id focus on paying my own bills first.
The thing that bugs me most is that there seem to be no real strings attached to it. We hand it out and eventually have to keep handing it out because if we don't our unstable puppet government will fall, and apparently that beats the democratic way.
Using the US Gov's definition of allies: heck no, mine:yes.
You do know where that foreign aid money goes right? The answer is not to the people.
I hate the idea, but it's a necessary evil.
Why is it necessary? We were pretty isolated for a lot of our history?
I'm not saying I don't think we should be involved in the world I'm just saying it's not 100% necessary
Yes, but it should be carefully reexamined regularly . Automatic donations can go to the wrong places .
Foreign aid, makes up about 1% or the budget, it helps hundreds of millions of people around the world, and it gives the U.S. a lot of influence in World Politics. For the love of God. Why do people regard it so negatively.
Because it's our money. There's no authority in the constitution to give it away.
Article 1: Section 8
The Congress shall have the power:
1. To lay and collect taxes, duties, imposts, and excises, to pay the debt and provide for the common defense and general welfare of the United States.
It's in there alright. Whether Foreign aid is in favor of the General Welfare of the United States? That's debatable. But it seems to have made the world better...and the U.S. happens to be in the world.
Made the world better? Are you high? Have you looked at the condition of those countries "receiving" our aid?
Very nice work, ntran
Sdbrev would you like to see them before our help or without it?
We give them food most Americans would consider themselves too good to eat.
Sdbrev. Have you ever been to a Third World Country? I highly doubt that. The number of people in the world that rely on foreign aid just for their food and water would astonish you.
While we here in the US, are literally throwing away and estimated 50% of the food we eat, and we can't spare one stinking penny per tax dollar to help someone who would be
totally satisfied with eating one tenth of the amount of food the average American consumes.
The fact that so many of my fellow countrymen think so narrowly and selfishly, absolutely makes me sick.
Bull. Americans give a tremendous amount to charity on top of what is taken from them by force to give away.
Because it lowers their taxes.
Yep. By about 1 little percent. It's okay though. That little 1 percent only pays for the lives of a couple hundred million people per year. I mean, God forbid that I be forced to pay for something useless.
Yes since we're trillions in debt. It's the least we can do and give more away until the debt reaches infinity.
Not neccessarily...we would still have influence over most of the planet, especially the poor bc they know they make more money with us than without us. Even if we are taking advantage of them.
Absolutely no money for any other country period.
We don't even have enough money to help ourselves
Not a huge fan of giving away US tax dollars to other countries. However, if these nations were to receive monetary support from our enemies instead, we would have some serious problems.
No. We're deep in debt. That should be taken of first before giving money away.
If we could afford it I might be more willing to support it. Until then I vote nay
Because it's worked splendidly so far right? No...
I'm sorry but 1 shipment of foreign aid going bad is not worth stopping thousands of packages going out. Without USAid a lot of people would die. Including probably half of North Korea.
Nothing to be sorry over. I understand your opinion, which doesn't change mine.
Key word ALLIES! Pakistan is not one of our ALLIES!
Don't support those who are against us.
Correct! Such a hard concept to grasp.
No $$ to allies or enemies, how bout we take care of our own first. then after we pay off our national debt , if we have a surplus , we help other countries.
Saudi Arabia? Nope!
Qatar? Oh, HELL no.
If you could extrapolate on how Saudi Arabia isn't an ally that would be interesting- as they have historically been a huge representative of U.S interests in the region, and have been a great trade partner.
And they financed the 9/11 hijackers, and have been secret sponsors of a world of terrorism. You do realize that Osama bin Laden was from Saudi Arabia, and al-Qaeda had its roots in Wahhabi Islam in Saudi Arabia, right?
why are we buying their friendship, they should be buying ours
This is Reddy Roosevelt's America anymore...
Teddy*. Autocorrect is being difficult again.
And isn't*. You know what, I'm going to give up on writing for the day lol.
