The TV in the other room keeps turning on by itself. No one else is home and my cat is laying next to me (so he isn't accidentally sitting on the remote). Is there any reasonable explanation for why this keeps happening?

Asshole neighbor with a universal remote
We had one that did that. Even without batteries in the remote. Had to unplug it from the wall. Scared the hell out of me!
Check the battery in the remote.
Nearby remotes using the same frequency. I can turn on my TV with a model helicopter's remote control.
⬆️⬆️⬆️Here's your answer!
Your mind is likely making things up.
Would freak me out.
The Blackhawks are doing it because they don't want you to see how bad they suck.
WHYYYYY do I come across these questions 10:30 at night‼️‼️
< =: -O
It's the cat
Probably on a timer. A friends TV does the same and the cable box doesn't turn on so the screen is fuzzy.
You can buy devices just to mess with other people's televisions. Here's a link to one.
A prankster neighbor with a universal remote.
There are other possibilities of course, but let's not exclude the paranormal.
I never had a remote for the TV in my room, but a long while ago I took my dad's remote and tried it and it actually worked! So the most likely thing causing that is someone else having a remote that works on that TV.
Cover the IR sensors.
This user is currently being ignored
We used to have a TV and a lamp that did this. And this was when the televisions didn't have remotes -- they had rotary dials. It doesn't happen anymore. Never had an explanation. Spooky.
more than likely someone close has a similar TV with matching codes and you're picking up their signals.
Is it a "smart" TV?
Maybe someone else with the same remote frequency, or your own remote is going bad or the TV itself.
Or, of course, you're domicile is haunted.
It might be the TV. The vizio logo on the TV lights up. It was blinking and now it won't even come on.
It may be a problem with the power source. Try using a different power cord and see it that does everything. If not, look it up on the Internet. It may be time for a replacement.
I came in to say what others have...it's a neighbor. My friend's home was built at the same time as her neighbor's so same appliances and gadgets. Her fans would turn on and off. Her TV would too, and all the shows she DVR'd were deleted and
replaced with horse racing! She thought she was going insane. :)
Ours does that. We think a neighbor has the same control.
A power anomaly, or more likely, a remote with batteries running low, or stray infrared light from some other source. Try removing the batteries from the remote in the other room. If it still does it, cover the sensor on the TV with electrical tape.
All I can say is, watch your wine closely or better yet, drink it and forget about the tv. :)
I have at least a dozen bottles. I can't drink it all that quickly :)
Darn. Let's hope your guest leaves your good stuff alone. :)
Neighbor with the same remote frequency.
I had the same issue when I lived at the appartment ... moved the TV and problem was solved
I had a friend who was convinced her cat was doing that. Then she discovered that the bank of fluorescent lights over her bonsai collection was misbehaving somehow. It might have been just the timer, or something about the lights themselves.
So maybe there's something electrical that's on the same circuit? Or maybe there's something else electronic that has another way of affecting the TV tuning.
It's clearly a poltergeist. You need to have priest come to your house to release the spirit.
Maybe. But this has never happened before this weekend.
You may not be living in an apartment, but many of these explanations are still possibilities. www.apartmenttherapy.com/why-does-my-tv-turn-on-by-itse-147969
Someone's hiding in your place.
That's worse than a ghost.
Is that why all my wine keeps disappearing?
A poltergeist will do that to.
He better keep his hands off my cabernet :)
They really don't have hands. :)
I have a ghost in my house too.... Fun times! :-)
Not fun times. It was creeping me out. I finally just unplugged the TV.
We had to lock our bedroom door every night to keep our ghost from opening it.
Is yours at least a friendly ghost?
So far, yeah. She hasn't done anything horrible yet. We did get a picture of her, but that's it.
Dude not just any ghost-- Harriet Tubman is in your house.
Probably a short in the power cord.
