Is substantial exposure to technology (computers, tablets, etc.) a good thing for children as young as 5yrs old?
Technology is terrible for children. Here is a link that says it all:
Some exposure is a good thing. But, just like everyone else, kids need balance. They should also be playing outside, coloring, etc.
Yes as long as they also play. You know, like with toys and maybe some physical thing like running or bike riding. Like we did before all this "progress".
In our times, technology is like air. It's there, you don't notice it - until you're not getting any.
Gonna go with no on this one.
Balanced with physical play with other kids, yes.
But to train to be a hermit playing alone on a tablet or computer is not good.
I think so, as long as there is still plenty of time for just playing.
It's the future. They may as well start young.
Of course it is. Technology is the future; the faster they get their 10,000 hours of experience in and master it, the better off they'll be.
That's not to say there isn't such a thing as overexposure -- there certainly is -- but it's effects are essentially unknown; it's assumed that 'screen time' is bad beyond some amount, but no one seems to be able to pin down exactly *why*.
Ha! I would agree, but staying active and not glued to screens is important as well. I think concepts like NFL's "Play 60" minutes a day are a very good thing.
I can guarantee that at age 5 neither Bill Gates or Steve Jobs had logged in any computer time.
But think ahead. Will the inventor of flying cars have done so? Probably!
