Last night, I was flipping through the channels and stopped on MSNBC, which was running a segment favorable to Fidel Castro. Do you have a positive or negative opinion of the retired leader of the Communist Party of Cuba?

And they say the same about capitalists. Either think the other is less free.

We capitalists are just controlled by a more behind the scenes group of people. Just because we don't have a Castro doesn't mean we're much more free.

It used to be, and may still be, against the law for Cubans to go into tourist hotels because they didn't want the Cubans to see how well foreigners live compared to them.

MSNBC is way out there in left field anyway. I don't watch it!

My father was in the navy and stationed for a time in Cuba during WWII. He was conservative and vehemently anti-communist but he told me that he believed Castro was better for Cuba than his predecessor Batista. Lost U.S. money = anti-Castro sentiment

Neither really, but mostly good I guess. The right guy for the time and place.

Cuba could have been a huge thriving economy if it hadn't been for Fidel.

Maybe that wasn't important.

I'm just going to ignore the question just as we have ignored Castro into irrelevance and insignificance since the 60's.

Next thing you'll hear is MSNBC championing Benito Mussolini, Hideki Tojo, or Joseph Stalin. You might even hear a sympathy piece done on Adolf Hitler... I think I just threw up in my mouth a little... yayyyy

He was no Adolf Hitler. Read up on him. Those that hated him were those with Western ideals.

He's no saint. He is guilty of human rights violations. Like Che Guevara, his hands are dirty. Repression of religions, attacks on religious people, concentration camps (UMAP), promoting a racism to favor light skinned Cubans (akin to Batista).

I know a lot about Castro and his actions. I usually compare revolutionaries to George Wasington. It's easy to see their true colors this way. One fights for freedom while the other fights for control.

Thanks! I have been more reserved as of late (many months) because of the negative attitudes of SOH'ers to reducible, belittle, and insult those they don't agree. But I'm always using the app still xD

Cuba is a socialistic society. It works so well people will risk their lives to leave there and come to the crummy Capitalist America.

Cuba could have been like the Florida keys or like a Caribbean vacation paradise. Instead it's very poor and people don't have even the most basic amenities we all take for granted. I blame it all on Fidel.

I agree. If not for Fidel, Cuba would look a whole lot more like Bermuda and whole lot less like Haiti.

11/07/14 2:50 pm

If you think $15 per month is good which the average citizen makes. Why do you think so many working class people risk their lives on home made rafts to float to America if they have it so great?

BeachSt Coastal Virginia
11/07/14 4:44 pm

If that's their average, then it must be good for them. All I know is I'm below average here. Average is relative to the economy of that country.

BeachSt Coastal Virginia
11/07/14 4:45 pm

And I said was. I didn't say Cuba is a great place. Just that he was the better option in the 60s.

11/07/14 4:59 pm

No he wasn't. He killed or imprisoned anyone that disagreed with him and made his whole country tremendously poor. Our poor are richer than any citizen in that country. Get a paper route here and you will be better off than a doctor in their country

BeachSt Coastal Virginia
11/08/14 11:55 am

I'm not sure about that. Cuban doctors are skilled. Other countries want Cuban doctors. Aside from their nearly 100% literacy rate, their medical programs are amazing. Quit being a condescending asshole.

Everybody has a state controls everything Utopia they'd love to live in. But Cuba is not mine.

I'll bet Cuban doctors want other countries as well.

think4yourself Not a safe space
11/08/14 12:17 pm

I am not being condescending, I am being literal. Doctors make about $25 a month and the ones that come here can't pass the medical exams to become doctors here because their education is so subpar over there.

Convenient to overlook his insistence on abolishing racial subjugation in Cuba. And the fact that Cuba was a de facto colony of the United States, Castro ended a branch of our imperialism. The revolution was proper.

He did good thing and bad thing for his country. The reason Cuba is poor is because of the embargo. Cuban citizens have free healthcare and education. But overall, he's a bad dictator, and Cuba would be better off as a democracy.

Cuba is poor because it was dependent on Soviet subsidies for its sustenance. When the Soviet Union collapsed, all of its client states went down with it.

1. He wasn't friends with FDR. Castro admired FDR for his policies.

2. It depicted him as an idealistic youth with nothing but good intentions and motives for the well-being of his country.

Why compare Castro to a popular American president at all?

Brandon1995 San Francisco

My mistake, he was interested in America and FDR and wrote him a letter. So what? That is a fact. They didn't compare him to FDR either. All they showed was a letter he wrote.
