"Abortion is old as the world. Gay marriage, please-it's older than the world. We had Julius Caesar, Alexander the Great... To say it's modern... it's older than we are... For us, not legalizing it would be to torture people needlessly."
Don't forget about pedophilia prostitution and slavery.
Using this quote is not a good argument for gay marriage. Murder is older than that and there are some who say that is also wrong and thus our right to commit murder is being denied.
I'm for gay marriage. Actually, I'm for the government getting the hell out of marriage and not dictating its parameters at all. Regardless, to equate not allowing anyone to marry with torture is unreasonable and extreme, IMO.
Matt, it would be "Res publica mortua est."
I don't think Julius Caesar was homosexual. Alexander the Great might have been because Greece's culture didn't care about men having sex but I don't think Caesar did.
Yeah sodom and Gomorrah were as old as the world
Legalizing something bad (like murder) just because people have committed those bad acts since ancient times is neither logical nor good.
Legalizing marriage is unnecessary. If you want to go back so far, government didn't use to get involved in marriage.
Your really stretching logic here Matt
By that logic, legalizing murder is way past due.
Homosexual relations are ancient, but gay marriage is not. The statement is objectively false.
"Torture" is the oldest word in that quote. Should we legalize torture?
I have no problem with legalizing these things, but this was a poor quote.
I agree with you on that
I must ask, why did you choose it?
Because I'm sick of arguments based solely on the past, and while it in my experience tends to be used more by conservatives, it isn't exclusive. It's one thing to say "abortions have always happened" or "gay relationships and even marriages have
Happened in the past" but just like "the founders said so" you need more of an argument than that IMHO a to present a legitimate point, no matter how much I may agree with you overall stance
I see. "Just because it's always been like this" is not a valid excuse for anything.
Besides being false, it's bad logic. Gay marriage is pretty new....
Really? Ever heard of a little place called Ancient Greece?
Did they marry or just practice homosexuality?
They wouldn't have been recognized by Roman law
Torture as a comparison here? Strange and overkill.
Just because something is old doesn't make it right. Humanity can be really, really stupid for a very long time.
Something that takes place on this world is older than the place it takes place? Yeah, whatever.
Age itself is not sufficient to justify concepts and actions. Abortion may have existed for thousands of years, but so has war, genocide, and a plethora of other malign tendencies.
I'm totally pro gay marriage but the whole torture comparison is just bizarre.
I'm fine with legalization, but all that was total bullshit.
Absulute unadulterated hogwash and a load of pure organic fertilizer of taurine origin.
Hahahaha! I agree.
Gay marriage is a modern phenomenon. No culture has ever considered same-sex relationships to be equal to opposite-sex unions until recently.
Unless you count Nero, gay marriage just isn't something that's happened in history.
Ancient Greece... Europe....
In ancient Greece, middle-aged men would have quasi-erotic relationships with teenaged boys and sometimes with each other; but almost all of them also had households, including wives and children.
Gay marriage did not exist.
With exceptions at certain times and in certain places, open homosexual practices largely disappeared from Europe after Greece was conquered by the Romans, who were conservative.
I disagree. Not allowing 2 people to get married isn't torture. To compare the 2 is to downplay torture. That being said, I have no issues with gay marriage. Marry away!
I agree with this disagreement.
That's not even logical. Poor argument.
Legalizing selfish abortions is in fact torture!
Too late to be a drama major?
Drama's not really my thing.
Drama IS not...dang typo
Are you sure because you sure get dramatic up in here.
Only on Tuesdays! :)
I like it. I'd change "the world" to "civilization" or "human kind", but I like it.
Murder is as old as the world as well. Should we legalize something just because it's "as old as the world"?
No. Terrible argument. In my opinion.
Again, the idiots fail the grasp the concept of the difference between what does cause another person harm and what doesn't.
So you are saying murder doesn't cause harm?
Not sure why you would want to look stupid.
