Should affirmative action be based on socioeconomic background rather than race/ethnicity?
There should not be affirmative action. If women only want to hire women, gays only hire gays, blacks only hire blacks, Christians only hire Christians, then they should have the freedom to do so. Diversity is good, but we should not mandate it.
Can anyone show me where the neither button is?
Absolutely- their are more poor white people in the US than all other races combined. They are close to invisible in our society. Giving poor people a hand up (not a hand out) if they are willing to work for it makes America stronger.
There shouldn't be any affirmative action at all.
Abolish any & all forms of affirmative action. Hire someone becuz they are qualified for job, appear capable of learning job, or because you like them & want to give them a chance. Education: they have the grades & ambition to succeed. Period.
My grades are a reflection of my parents early investment in my education, I went to preschool, I went to private schools, anyone who had an upbringing like me is greatly privileged over everyone who didn't. My success is not due to hard work and
commitment, it's because I was fortunate to have parents who could afford to put me on an expensive track to success. Education outcomes have way more to do with early investment than "ambition to succeed".
And that means you're more qualified for the job, rode. Doesn't matter whether it's your investment or your parents. Nobody cares how you became more qualified or by what means you reached that point as long as you didn't reach it via gov program.
Gov program where preferences are given to one person over another.
as usual, not one single person knows what affirmative action is.
You are asking the wrong question. What you should be asking is whether we agree with the idea of affirmative action.
No. It should simply end. Period.
That would turn most of the South on its ear.
Get rid of it all together.
It would be better than race based but I think it should be abolished in hiring practices. I think schools using socioeconomic considerations makes sense bc some poor kids probably got screwed into a bad school through no fault of their own.
That would be better, but the abolition of affirmative action would be best.
Students and prospective employees should be judged based on their individual merits.
If those are the ONLY choices, yes. Better choice, get rid of all affirmative action!
No, there should be no such thing as affirmative action.
No. It should be abolished and advancement dependent on merit.
I'm a liberal socialist and I don't like affirmative action. You can't fix racism with racism.
If we are truly equals, then we should be treated as such. If you say that one group needs more help than I do, then you're saying that I'm better than they are. Because they wouldn't need more help to reach the same point if that wasn't true.
Sorry bud. Wrong thread.
I think that the entire idea of affirmative action is just government sanctioned discrimination. What else would you call that kind of preferential treatment?
And why are they more deserving of it than all of us poor ass college students?
It's not preferential. It makes a group equal to another, not preferred over another.
It's absolutely preferential. Who says that one group is unequal to another? And who says that one group deserves more help than the other?
If you don't already know that inequality exists in the world, I can't educate you on it, sorry. Carry on with your bubble.
But if you want to take inequality as a given, then you are admitting that that party cant as good as another without help. Which is discrimination.
We are not "truly equals." That's Kermie's whole point, equality is not even close to being completely achieved.
How not? Ever person in this country can succeed with effort. We have no caste system. You are not forced to stay poor. Do well in school (which is a choice), and you'll qualify for the same student loan as anyone else.
We shouldn't have it at all, but at least base it on something that makes sense. So yes.
Yes...why shouldn't we offer a hand up to people who need one?
How about getting the feds out of the racist business.
Affirmative action doesn't work but this is better than race. There's got to be something we can do for poorer people that might not be able to afford college though. The problem won't fix itself
Isn't this what student loans are already for?
Yeah but those all together need to have lower rates. It's just not a good set up in general, especially for people in my generation and below who have no clue about how to manage money
All discrimination -- especially the kind that is sponsored by governments-- must be stopped now!
Affirmative Action is discrimination.
There should be no such thing. It in itself is discrimination.
How about junking the whole idea?
There should be no such thing as affirmative action.
Affirmative Action shouldn't be.
But if it had to exist, which would you rather have?
