Fact: DC is a very poor and dangerous city. Hypothetical: A US state has to annex DC. VIRGINIA with financial stability, booming infrastructure, and tough on crime, or MARYLAND with proven crime reduction, huge wealth, and the tough Gov O'Malley?

My aunt lives near D.C in Virginia, and she's slowly getting squeezed out by rich people. I bet in a couple years someone will buy her out. She's lived there 40+ years and these rich motherfuckers are pushing people out. Hell I wouldn't shed a

Isn't it interesting how both Maryland and Virginia both want the other to take DC?

Virginia's bad enough with NoVa (nothing personal Alynn!) -- we don't want DC to add to the mess...

Give Dc to Maryland. We don't want it. Also, geographically it would make more sense since Dc is separated from Va by the Potomac River,

Well, I'm a VA resident and I don't want it!

Several reasons, but here's one...Because we already see too much of our money go to Northern Virginia instead of Hampton Roads...almost all of our road money a year or two ago for example. I think that trend would be amplified.

BeachSt Coastal Virginia

Good reason. There would be a lot of rehabilitation to do. While we get tolls on existing, paid off tunnels....

I also wouldn't want my state associated with our political system and politicians either. Let them keep their corruption up there!

I find it funny that the majority of each state wants the other state to take it.

DC is far less poor and dangerous than it was 20 years ago.

DC only managed to lower its crime rate by moving its public housing projects out of the city. The criminals live in PG County now.

^ I grew up in PG county. That's the truth. PG county is a hell hole.

PG county has always been a shithole. Always.

Didn't Virginia already get its part of DC back about 150 years ago? It seems like what is left would be Maryland's problem.

If it were up to me we would give it back.

Virginia is 100% Maryland and Maryland is 100% Virginia. What does that say?

Virginia already took back the land it gave up for DC, so I guess it'll fall on Maryland.

Crime reduction? Maryland? Don't make me laugh. Thugville, a lot of it. Nice parts too, but the majority of this state is crawling with criminals.

How poor is DC? I've read that they have chronic problems with schools for instance. It seems odd, when the surrounding areas are apparently quite wealthy.

11/01/14 5:48 pm

See above. "thugville"

11/01/14 5:06 pm

The area was carved out of Maryland, they can get it back. Virginia already got their area back. Maryland also makes sense since DC is sitting on their side of the Potomac.

Cole12 ...

DC isn't that dangerous. Similarly sized and geographically-located cities like Philadelphia and Baltimore have far higher murder rates. And DC isn't poor either. The metro area has a median household income of almost $90k, making it one of...

Cole12 ...

the wealthiest cities in the country.

BeachSt Coastal Virginia

The metro area. DC is a poverty stricken city. Good schools are not accessible. SE DC is one of the most dangerous areas. Income inequality lessons could be taught here.

BeachSt Coastal Virginia
11/01/14 4:53 pm

The metro area contains Arlington County, Montgomery County, King or Prince Something County, Fairfax County, Loudon County. You'll also find these counties on a list of the wealthiest counties in America.

Cole12 ...
11/01/14 5:06 pm

I mean, yeah, I know many of those counties are very wealthy, but there are many wealthy areas in DC proper too. And there are dozens of cities in the US with higher poverty rates than DC.

I went with Virginia because of the...

Cole12 ...

"financial stability" part.

I have lived in Alexandria for 34 yrs and spend most of my weekends all over DC. Sure there are poor areas but, for the record, SE is one *quadrant* of the city. Much of DC, as Cole says, is quite wealthy.

BeachSt Coastal Virginia
11/01/14 10:37 pm

Not majority but a large enough percentage to be ridiculous. 20-ish% last I checked. Nothing next to Arlingtons 5%, but still pretty out there.

I lived in SE 20 years ago. It was scaryville back then. Automatic gunfire a couple times a week. It's totally different now.

BeachSt Coastal Virginia
11/02/14 8:26 am

Well sure. 20 Years ago was the crack epidemic. Every city and state has seen crime reduced from them. But relative to every city NOW, it's still dangerous. Of course, depending on where you are.

Assuming the annexation is legal with the ultimate objective of making DC prosperous and safe.
