Nah. Short term panic is not belief.

Proud to be an agnostic. Don't have to deal with ridiculousness.

People do a lot in a desperate situation that isn't genuine and may not last once the duress is gone.

I've never been an atheist.

I've been told by some people who have been in foxholes that the comment "There are no atheists in foxholes" is simply not true. Because they *were* the atheists in the foxholes, & it didn't change them.

I believe you! I'm sure many kinds of challenging, frightening, and/or near-death experiences (as well as other kinds) can have a profound effect on people that brings about faith.

Just saying that it doesn't *always* do that.

Yep I've also read similar accounts.

I don't believe that someone can truly be an atheist. You can disagree with all religions and even with their definition of God. But deep down everyone believes in something.

Not in a supernatural creator, they don't.

They don't have a clue how the heck the universe got here, what was here "before," & have lots of other unanswered questions. But that doesn't mean they think a creator god was responsible... in fact,

believing that just brings up more questions... like: how did the creator get here?

Many believers in a greater being that has existed forever that they were there before everything was created.

I'm an atheist even while the plane is falling.

Posting this poll kinda had me worried that I was gonna get screamed at for posting it but I'm happy to see that most of the people that have commented have a reasonable debate and there not just saying your wrong and that's it.

Nope. I guess it could be true for some people with a religious upbringing, but I can't see myself spontaneously believing in a God at that point for the first time in my life. That just makes no sense to me at all.

Doesn't have to be God. Any force in the universe that you believe that can help you.

Like gravity? Oh Gravity please reverse for a moment and lessen the impact!

There is no mystical deity or "force" that I believe in or can even conceive of tbh.

Maybe for some, but a friend of mine was on a plane that was having serious problems (fire, smoke, hard to breathe), and some people were praying fervently to God, while others were actually cursing God. It definitely brought out people's true colors

I have been shot at, in car accidents and depressed... Never thought of gods as being real.

Disagree. Most people don't just renounce their beliefs because their lives are in danger.

I'm not saying a atheist on an airplane that's going down coverts to a religion it was meant that the plane starts falling and the atheist starts to pray etc. To a God that he/she doesn't believe in.

The question said "you're an atheist until..." So that insinuates that they were an atheist but are no longer one. I'm sure SOME atheists do that though, just to "cover all the bases" in case a God did exist.

That's true a friend of mine told it to me I didn't fully grasp the different views people could see. Good point.

You'd think an all-knowing god would know they kind of cheated, though, wouldn't you?

@Susan You'd think so right? But some Christian sects believe that faith alone will allow you to enter the kingdom of heaven. That never really made sense to me.
