(Intriguing or Crazy?) So today I heard a new one. A person of another ideology explained to me that because Jesus was a socialist, they decided to become an atheist for that reason.

Render unto Caesar right? That certainly doesn't sound very Republican.

If Jesus is also the Biblical god, he is actually a convoluted mess of ideologies. At times he is a communist demanding everyone give their riches away and other times he is a socialist encouraging charity, but mostly he is just a genocidal dictator.

Even though I'm a socialist, I think he was more of a libertarian because he taught others to treat people right and leave them alone and would probably therefore have a more voluntarist view.

10/31/14 7:48 pm

Jesus was more of a communist than a socialist

You don't choose to be an atheist. You either believe there is some sort of god or you don't. My guess is this person still believes entirely.

Jesus wasn't socialist. He believed in choosing to give to people, not choosing to steal from them.

I disagree. Not exactly, refusing to give to people when you had plenty is greed. A seven deadly sin.

Jesus always confused me! Was he a nomad that roamed around and caused trouble or what.

I'd have explained that the Jesus is just one of many, many choices. They can't all be socialists. That just doesn't seem like a very good reason to become an anything to me.

Rejecting the idea that Jesus is a god does not make you an atheist.

It just makes you non Christian.

He said he was Athiest.

Jesus was not a socialist.

Socialist? He claimed to be King. When he was crucified that was his crime. People walked past and saw a man on a cross dying with a sign over his head 'King of the Jews'.

Calls himself the divine right Monarch of Heaven and Earth. When he says feed the hungry that isn't for the benefit of a the social order that's for the benefit of the Monarch.

10/31/14 11:09 am

Jesus was no socialist...

10/31/14 10:52 am

Wow that's interesting. Placing political ideology above religious ideology? Maybe they didn't fully grasp the whole religion thing.

You have to play twister with the Bible to get to the socialist part. I've even seen people say that Jesus was gay. People can get whatever they want from it.

Jesus was most certainly not a socialist. And no republicans, Jesus was not a white conservative. Get over yourselves.

That's what I expect, someone to say "Hey he's our party" or something. However this just baffled me.

10/31/14 9:29 am

Yes, many people become atheists via catastrophically stupid and illogical reasoning. This is neither shocking nor news.

Jesus would likely be a socialist in a neutral civic sense. As in he wouldn't feed the poor to help the economy grow, he'd just feed the poor. He would however heal to heal even if it's expensive.
He said "if you don't work you don't eat" which is

What republicans usually use in defense of feeding the poor argument (both), but he also said help your neighbor. (socialism)

I think he'd be a generic socialist, not progressive as he isn't working towards anything.

That doesn't make any sense to me from angle I try to look at it, so I'm going with crazy. Although it could just be... dumb, I guess.

Crazy with the the word but pretty close to it. Jesus was about faith in God not about political ideologies

10/31/14 9:17 am

Exactly. Jesus didn't take sides on government or economic models.
He was all about personal responsibility.

Rotavele Alabama
10/31/14 10:42 am

I completely agree. Usually he's regarded as social for his equal treatment and assisting the poor. However he had no agenda or goals, so he wasn't politically socialist, just socialist in behavior. Kind of.. Sort of.. Lol.

If Jesus himself were to give his Sermon on the Mount speech at both Party conventions, he would be applauded by the Democrats and booed off the stage by the GOP.

10/31/14 8:28 am

Jesus wasn't a socialist.

10/31/14 11:10 am

Like I said, Jesus wasn't a socialist, and a leftist's misunderstanding of Bible verses doesn't change it.

10/31/14 11:15 am

The author also doesn't try to make the case that Jesus was a socialist.

Yes but most people of faith claim that Jesus wasn't a socialist and back it up. I am trying to figure out if this person may have been like heavily scarred by a socialist person, or what's going on. I can't believe "leaving God behind for politics".

It may be from the lack of sleep but this was so unique to me that I just couldn't understand. I've heard of changing parties for religious purposes, but giving up religion because of mortals? It's new and I wanted to know more about it.

I wasn't sure if this is an interesting subject to others or if it seems too out there to be interesting to them. I've had a lack of sleep so I may just be a bit weird on this one. :P

If anyone knows someone similar, feel free to explain deeper.
