Loosely inspired by Pirate: A murder takes place in another state. The individual who is murdered is a stranger to you. Does this murder negatively affect you in any way?
Yes. Like a bad idea or unchallenged meanness, it will probably spread. I don't think evil or criminal behavior generally respects lines arbitrarily drawn on a map.
Society doesn't have a single address.
This is not a good point. Gay marriage doesn't negatively affect anyone. In murder, one or more people end up dead. How is this even a discussion?
This poll doesn't say anything about gay marriage though. That was a different poll.
Isn't he referring to the poll about how gay marriage negatively affects you?
I think he was inspired by that poll, but this one doesn't have a gay component to it at all. If it did then this poll would be better dressed and look all "metro." :-)
Wow that is a good point, this is why I like SOH. Reddit never had such thought provoking points as this, I love you guys.
Depends on where you spend your time on Reddit.
And this really isn't a good point. No shit Sherlock, I'm not directly affected by the murder of a stranger in another state, but a person was murdered, not at all equatable to gay marriage.
It can be compared to anything that is immoral. Abortion the same way. And thank you for the kinds words, Zack
It does but very indirectly.
"Any man's death diminishes me, because I am involved in mankind, and therefore never send to know for whom the bells tolls; it tolls for thee."
John Donne, Meditation XVII
Yes. Mayhem in society affects everybody in society.
Good point! I wish I could have thought of that example when debating with Nemmy the other day.
