I work in what's called a show kitchen. We have 3 chef tables designed to have the perfect view of an ocean sunset on one side, and behind the scenes of all the cooking on the other. Ever had a job where you were on display while working?
Event set-up. People are parading through all day examining your work, checking on progress, making minor changes to the original plan. It's especially fun on a ladder 17' up in a tent.
I'd love to watch you or any other good chef cooking. I'd be one of them hanging around watching and taking pics and bugging you with how-to questions. You'd end up calling security to have me removed.
You should go on Chopped!
Nursing, for sure. Often anxiously and critically. But also often teaching patients and family members while doing something like dressing changes, etc.
Pharmacist. 14-hour days of being a virtual zoo exhibit.
Must be fun when one of the chefs burns themselves.
Usually we won't really know until after service unless it's a real doozy, but that rarely happens. I get little ones all the time and find them when I'm changing.
Teachers are always on display.
Your dream job?
When I worked at a tea shop
Boy that musta been heaven for you.
Lol, every day
Even on weekends?
Well, sure seems like it sometimes, lol. Like open house at the school this weekend.
Not as "entertainment" per se, but giving eye examinations often involves the entire family watching. A couple of times they even took pictures.
That's happened to me too. First job I had where strangers wanted their picture taken with me.
If you're anywhere near the Bradenton-Sarasota area, I'll come take a picture with you :)
Not exactly close by. Not to mention I have to say, the whole cat pillow thing is a bit frightening.
No one ever called me frightening before. I sort of like it. What did you envision? The truth is that I let my cats use me for a pillow. I have one sleeping with his head on my foot right now.
Check MilkDud's poll about black cats from earlier. I make myself clear there.
There was I time I didn't like cats at all, either. Then one of them stole my heart.
Ah HA! Thief cat! Told ya they were up to something.
I did when I worked at Starbucks. People really like to tell baristas how to do their jobs and they'll really get in their faces to lean over the counter and watch. It was pretty obnoxious but your job sounds cool!
Lucky for me, the onlookers really don't ever try to advise me. That would bug the hell outa me.
That sounds very cool.
And yes, I am on display everyday at my job.
It's kinda like being in a fish bowl. Ironic seeing we work with so much seafood.
I don't have to interact nearly as much with my onlookers as you do though.
Rob- are you saying that as you prepare food, you're always watched?
Exactly. Those 3 tables are even raised so they can see better. Lots of Ooos & ahhs when any of use cook with liquor. Burning off the alcohol makes a nice flame. When I use cognac in the caramel on the bread pudding, for example. Pretty tasty too.
Oh man, that sounds delish, Rob.
The whole snapper is a favorite as well, though Emma doesn't like hearing about it.
Or seeing it, like this..lol
I love fish and that is beautiful!
You're an artist!
Thanks. :) How do you feel about lobster?
That's a 10 inch blade to give you an idea of how big Sebastian over here is. He didn't want to go down without a fight, but I won.
Whoa, Sebastian was a beast! Glad you won the fight :)
You don't even want to know how to keep their tails straight during in the cookie process. Em was not too happy about it.
I'm going to pass on that tidbit of info :)
Obviously I meant cooking, not cookie, thanks apple. Let me know if you change yer mind. I took a video.
I want to know about the tail thing. Why would it bother anyone? They're dead, right?
Well why can't you just quick bop them on the head first?
I didn't invent the method.
Here's your chance to refine the technique and make a name for yourself in the annals of cookery. And make some people happier. Who cares if the tail is straight anyway? It will taste the same - wonderful!
Watching somebody program is not too much of a show. Especially before we had CRT's. Just wrote it down and gave it to keypunch.
You be surprised what people find exciting.
I said no. I get observed occasionally, but I'm not constantly being watched.
Although, I was a lifeguard..
I would count your students as people who watch you.
Did you ever get to do a slow motion run while lifeguarding?
Not sure why this poll is being voted down like it is. Especially without a comment as to what is wrong with it. I don't care about the rating, just curious to the problem.
Not sure. I think it is a great question. Never been asked before.
This is what it looks like when people don't like you, or are jealous, but are too passive aggressive so say anything. It must be pretty sad to be them.
I thought it was a pretty original question too.
Does this surprise you???
Not at all. I know there are a handful of people who have a problem with me. It just disappoints me that they don't have the courage to voice their issues. I've never backed down from a grownup conversation on here.
You think that hiding behind a made up name would be courage enough
Not unless something bad happened. That is, everything was recorded, but nobody ever looked unless there was a problem. But if there was, everybody and his brother picked apart every word and decision looking for somebody to point a finger at.
Thank goodness it's nothing that intense. My worse case is over cooking something.
Which would happen to me a lot if I had the chance to stop and watch the sunrise. One minute turns into five and hey, is that something burning?
Luckily for me, the sunset happens before it get real busy. I usually can take a minute to look. Makes me think of my girl, every time. This view is from the kitchen, and one of those tables I'm talking about...
Lucky guy. That view, and the special girl, obviously.
My previous job we spent most of our time outside so it was kind of hard not to see us.
Well able to be seen isn't the same as being watched. Stocking clerks can be seen, but no one stands there and watches them do their job. Cept the stoners at Walmart at 3am.
I actually have been watched before. Some people want to make sure their golf clubs are perfectly clean.
Yeah, that counts. Sure. I'm just watched. They don't have to know how to cook when they leave. I have it easier, in that regards, than teachers.
