An asteroid is bound for earth that will wipe out humanity. We have a few civilian rockets to launch up to restore humanity post-impact. Should we send a few resource-loving yet intelligent Americans or a tribe that knows how to live off the land?

Send the people who are most able to survive and rebuild. I'd select clever, strong, healthy people with various skills. Survival, agricultural, medical, mechanical, culinary, child bearing... a bit of everything.

"The land" in space is far different than "the land" anywhere else.

It should be based on merit. The team must include survivalist, who may or may not be part of a tribe, but rather than basing admission on racial qualities we should focus on who will be best able to rebuild civilization.

Besides, I would imagine it would be a while before Earth is habitable again. Are these people even going to be able to return in their lifetimes?

If this asteroid is big enough to wipe out humanity, is the land still going to be the same?

The place that the tribe was used to will be destroyed. Send scientists engineers and doctors along with some books to read while the dust settles

A hippie commune would be nice. They know how to grow stuff.

The ecosystems in which the tribe is expert will be shattered, their knowledge will be limited. Humanity needs scientists and engineers to survive.

Absolutely, and scientists also know that living off the land is the only way here.

I agree, a multiple strengths/talents approach.
