"Are there any black people in the audience? Smile so I can see you." Was this joke told by a racist individual?

Sounds racist to me. Who said it?

Seems racist to me. I've heard that said before, albeit not on a stage. It was racist to me then too. Handler is terrible also.

Does it matter? Would it be any less racist if a black person told it?

Why does it matter who told it? Is one mans joke another mans racism?

There is a grey area when it comes to bigotry and comedy. So not necessarily.

Outside of comedy, people can say and do things that smack of bigotry without intending to be offensive...

If there's a gray area, then why is it so awful to tell a racial joke if you're not on a stage?

When you're on stage, you get the benefit of a doubt about what you're saying being an act as part of being an entertainer. If you say it in private conversation it's going to default to a sincere belief

Was the comedian a liberal?
Yes?

Then it's perfectly ok.

It was told by Chelsea Handler in her latest stand up special.... Is she a racist?

Nah, that was funny.

"racism can be deeply rooted in comedy"
(not you, derek)

Yeah, but this isn't racist.

I don't if she is racist, but she definitely isn't funny.

She's not one of my current female comics I like but I don't think what she said is racist. Why, did someone get upset and tell the internet how offended they are?
