The media will misrepresent and exaggerate things for dramatic effect to get more money. The Government will hide things either to safeguard Americans or cover their asses.
It's a toss-up. A better question is whose lies are more excusable :)
We have a relative handful elected politicians. The great majority of government has no incentive to lie beyond buying into the the illusion of doing their "duty". The media has no incentive not to lie, especially when the lie makes more money.
The problem is that too many people believe the media, and the lies spread like wildfire. It's the same with the government, but less people watch C-Span. The people hear the gov't's lies through the media, which twists them even more.
The media lies more by accident, because they don't actually give any shits about the truth as long as ratings. The government lies more deliberately, because they have national security concerns and because the upper echelons are anus-heads.
