And the whole art of ocean-going.

@USNavyVet I think you're still stuck on maps, I'm talking about a term for the ocean-goers themselves, not the maps. [of you're done that's fine because it seems unlikely that I'll manage to find the word]

I use maps in SS text books (therefore on paper) for school, so yes, yes I have.

yes hen I went to Orlando, FL and the hotel gave us cookies and a map but eventually we switched from the map to my dads gps on his android because it was easier to understand. :)

aeronautics, aerospace, etc. So the Ocean equivalent it's something like relating to nautical adventures, sailing, ocean going etc.

@USNavyVet, no, but seeing that you had experience in the Navy you may be able to decipher my confusion ;) I'm talking about the ocean equivalent of aviation. As in what is that word? If I could remember it'd be better, but now we have code with no code-book! In aviation we call it aviation…

Flat2lux..The word is MARINER. A sailor at sea.

@veritas… cares about Latin but, whatever, ignore me if I'm too much, just remember that I do have useful info occasionally.

Piss off FIAT; no one cares about your latin phrases.

@sevrandy Yeah, I do comment a lot, and sign-off with that phrase.

FIAT2LUX On Planet Earth
12/09/11 4:41 am

@USNavyVet yeah but that's not what I was thinking of, maybe maritimer? I was talking about a word describing the sailors that I STILL can't think of!

@Abby:) It is Latin for (with the exclamation point added for emphasis) "Let there be light!"

GPS doesn't always work in rural parts of Oregon, and in the mountains it can get you killed in the wintertime because of snow drifts on forestry roads (remember the Kim family?). I've used my maps a couple of times this year up in the Cascades, and I was glad that I always have one with me.

haven't used a paper map since I got my iPhone 5 years ago. does printing off map quest or google maps count as a paper map? I do have a nice laminated "real" street map of the Phoenix area in my guest rooms for guests who like to explore on their own.

12/08/11 9:31 pm

People don't know what paper maps are? Sad.

If I'm going out of town I mapquest and print a paper(?) map. Going through the mountains cell signal gets patchy.

When I drive my friend's tow truck when he's on vacation. Can't stand gps stuff, always inaccurate. Anytime I go somewhere I'm not familiar with, I look at a map before I leave to get a general layout in my head of directions.

12/08/11 8:15 pm

Abby its he guys screen name. he just comments. a lot. and always posts his name....

12/08/11 8:14 pm

what's a paper map? I always thought they only came in electronic form or in plastic.

12/08/11 7:09 pm

sometimes planning requires you to spread out that map

12/08/11 7:04 pm

What does FIAT LUX mean? Keep seeing it on here

12/08/11 6:52 pm

well I voted no thinking for driving etc., but I do look at maps. my husband has one on his wall in his office and as a teacher I use a wall map when explaining stuff to students.

@jerdawg yup. Another one of those things aviation inherited from ocean goers (I can't find the word I'm looking for).

I voted No yesterday, accurately. Then just now had to use a rental-car map in Baltimore lol - what are the odds?

12/08/11 2:48 pm

Does the non-electronic Skyrim preorder map count?

12/08/11 2:31 pm

I'm in the maritime industry, so ya, everyday. Although we call them charts, not maps. but pretty much the same thing,

12/08/11 2:20 pm

We have a Cessna & a Citabria. They're my husbands toys so I don't know the model numbers for them.
