Should the U.S. withdraw 100% of our troops from Afghanistan, or leave a few thousand behind for training and security?

Their stated reason for attacking us was troops in Muslim nations.

Is your memory really THAT short??!! How about a little thing called the September 11th attacks?!?! I understand that Osama is dead, but the Taliban and al-Qaeda remains. They need to be taken out.

We should've put a boot up their ass when we found out that they were harboring Bin Laden.

what a biased question. they wouldnt leave troops anywhere, they would station them.

Why the hell are we there in the first place!!? Bring our troops home and let those people over there live in peace and our troops live safely with their families!

Bring them all home. A bigger question is what to do in 10-15 years when Pakistan becomes a rogue state with atomic weapons as future casters say they will.

If we withdraw now, we hand over Afghanistan to the Taliban. Their government is warning us of this. It's still too soon.

Don't we have enough problems at home an don't need to spend trillions a year trying to fix other countries?

They can study the pictures then lol. Honestly who cares? They'll just use their opium fields to jump start the economy and the Taliban isn't ever going to go away.

I hale we can leave the same way we did as in Iraq but Obama's proposed plan is to only leave 3000-9000 troops in the entire country instead 15-20k at each airbase. With such a low number, I'm afraid the troops won't be able to carry out the task of training Afghans and defending themselves.

War is lost the second it begins.

Time to cut our losses and listen to both the American and Afghan people: withdraw.

Wow, how does making stuff up that's not even close to true usually work for you? Does reality not even figure into your rants? You realize the bailouts started under Bush, right? Reagan tripled the debt in the 80's and Bush doubled it again. Fiscally, the Democrats are much more responsible.

Lol. Obama added more debt to the economy than the last 43 presidents combined. So I believe it is valid.

I have Soldiers right now that have never been deployed, they are constantly asking how they can volunteer to deploy, it amazes me the dedication these younger troops have. The willing to put themselves out their for America. Those are the ones you want to keep around.

Being in a unit with people that have so many tours of duty and listening to the stories...I would go back in a heart beat, or if they need volunteers I will be the first to raise my hand, deployments can be hard, but in reality it's easy going.

majority of Soldiers do not mind Deployments. Speaking from experience 3 tours many Soldiers of mine look forward on deployments, the reason, our duty is just that, we do not like to sit back and just train. Not saying we look forward to war, we look forward to what we train for. Real missions

I agree with you, leaving a few back to make sure the Afghan army is for sure ready and trained to take over. My unit was 1 unit that left Iraq in Dec 2011,I can say I was amazed that we advanced Iraq Army as quickly as we did. They had 80-90% of the security taken care of before we left & confident

They would not leave them spread out it would be one or 2 big bases open such as Khandhar airbase and maybe another airbase. They had the same plan in affect when Obama was thinking about leaving soldiers in Iraq. Leave 1 big or 2 big air bases open. About 15-20k troops at each base.

Yes 145, 1 american life is worth a million foreign lives. Not saying im patriotic, because its dumb to be proud of where youre born, something you had no control over.

@gonzo as ideal as no more damage would be, that's not going to happen on it's own. They need support until they can at least have a presentable military.

Nick, the country of Afghanistan did not orchestrate 9/11 but at that point in time, their government was led by the Taliban who has close ties to Al Qaeda. The Afghan government not only housed terrorists but their government was filled with Al Qaeda members. Therefore, we had every right to...

Either remove them all or leave a reasonably large amount. This is one situation where compromise is not acceptable because if we only leave a few thousand troops, they will be so thinly spread out that it will be too difficult for them to defend themselves. I'm in favor of leaving troops until...

There is no winning a war if you have so much as one death. You can't lose but also win unless you're talking about a weight loss competition.

@14573 surely I wouldn't, and that's why decisions of this nature aren't made with 'hearts'. I'm just so fatigued at the quagmire this has become, and it's all too easy to allow visceral reactions to effervesce. Ideally, NO ONE ELSE would suffer, but this situation is less-than-ideal.

So you would save a few hundred American lives at the cost of thousands (if not more) lives of foreigners.

Mind: Perhaps a 100% withdrawal would be a bit precipitous. A "few thousand" does not seem unreasonable for training and securing the departure of exiting troops.
Heart: Get out now. 100% come home. Not one more drop of American blood. Let them resume killing each other for ANOTHER millennium.
