The ultimate failure for the people.
The ultimate success for government and connected groups.

If say successful in that we've for the most part kept terrorism off our soil, although at a terrible price.

You can't win a war on 'terror' anymore than you can win a war on 'poverty' or 'drugs.' Terrorism is a tactic, not a tangible, defeatable enemy.

It's not a war that can be won. It's just something that needs to be kept under control. Expand ISAF to Syria and Iraq and add 300000 more troops from many NATO countries and have them act as an on call army to deal with things.

06/12/14 7:21 pm

If the situation with Bowe Bergdahl has anything to say about it, then I say if we have resorted to negotiating with terrorists then it's not going very well

06/12/14 4:44 pm

It was a success until the point Obama took office and screwed up our foreign relations

06/12/14 5:15 pm

Nice joke.

There was no switch for the terrorists that said "now that Bush is out of office we've only got some bleeding heart liberal to deal with." The war on terror was a failure from the start because. Thr more soldiers we send, the more terrorists we make

06/13/14 7:11 pm

No joke, jokes on you liberals if it continues at the rate were going. This country is turning into a joke. There was a time where we stood for something. Now we just put our heads down in shame, along with the current president.

Failure because we refuse to finish anything we start and are too worried about petty things to do anything that would actually change anything

Under Obama's leadership we may be in a worse position and look foolish ; (((

06/12/14 11:56 am

Depends on what you think the goal was. If it was to decrease the threat if terrorism, it was a failure. If it was to profit certain groups and individuals while increasing government control of the populace, it was a success.

Look at it this way. In '96 Bin Laden issues a fatwa with four goals: the destruction of Israel, the US out of Saudi Arabia, the overthrow of secular leaders in Arab countries and oil at $100 per barrel.

He's gotten 3 out of 4.

monkey678 Towelhead
06/12/14 11:58 am

He's gotten close to 1. Israel still exists. US still has a presence in Saudi Arabia, A few secular leaders fell but most are in place. Oil prices continue to fluctuate so the juries out on that.

06/12/14 3:03 pm

As I understand it there are no US troops in Saudi Arabia. They left under Bush. The crown jewel for AQ was Egypt, which they said they could never successfully take over - but which we handed them on a silver platter. Oil prices have been over $100.

The point was he did not think Arab nations were being paid fairly.

As a bonus, we handed them the western portion of Iraq as a new base of operations.

Big failure. You can't tell tribal people to be democratic. They hate everybody.

About as effective (that is, not at all) as our other misadventure, the "war" on drugs.

With a president who won't even call the first Ft. Hood shooter a terrorist and wants to release all the rerrorists from GTMO and close it, how could we possibly be winning?

Like my other comment about Iraq, the failure came from starting it in the first place.

That really wasn't a war on terror.
We were duped into believing that it was.

Created more problems than it solved. Droning schools and weddings creates many extremists. Its amazing how if you slaughter someone's family that they might want to burn your flag or worse.

I think it's been as just as much a failure as the so called War on Poverty and War on Drugs.

It's seems to me to be a lot more like fighting terrorism with terrorism. Wars don't do any good until they're over and peace is reached.

It's been difficult but mostly successful. A misogynistic and fundamentalist Sunni government and a genocidal and tyrannical Ba'athist government have been toppled.

Gains made during the early years of the wars are now being lost due to an incompetent foreign policy; but, on the whole, we are still ahead of where we started.

It won't get any better in fact AlQuaeda will own Iraq very soon and they will do it with our weapons and money.
