You are a surgeon. A man shows up at your house late at night with a non lethal gunshot wound requiring urgent attention and offers a lot of cash if you help him. He won't go to a hospital because he doesn't want the incident reported to the police.

Doesn't matter why he got shot, the point is that he got shot, might bleed out from blood loss, and needs medical attention. Isn't that the point of being a doctor? Helping people no matter what the circumstance?

Hypocritical oath obliges the surgeon to help the man

I'd help, it makes me sick that things would be reported to the police against people's will... But how will I do it from my house with no equipment?

06/12/14 3:43 pm

Help, but while I'm gathering my supplies I call the police.

06/12/14 1:34 pm

Help, of course, but it didn't work out too well for Dr. Mudd.

I would assume if you refused to help him that he or one of his pals hiding in the bushes would kill you.

Help him then call the cops.

At that point I'd have a sophisticated surveillance system in place. I'd patch him up and then turn the data over to the authorities. Although before operating, I'd still recommend that he go to the hospital, because bending a fork…

You want to be an accessory after the fact? Cause that's how you get to be an accessory after the fact.

You can lose your medical license for that. Nope I wouldn't do it.

I don't think I want to make the guy with the suspicious gunshot wound angry...

I would do enough to keep him going, but not "be able" to remove the bullet for some reason. If there was a way to call someone or take a photo of him or his vehicle, I would also do that. Probably not try to call 911 unless he had me hostage.

If you have the energy, then yes. The Good Samaritan Law will protect you if anything goes awry as long as you stay within your scope of practice. That being said, you also 'should' alert the authorities but could do it after they leave. Hands free.

Call 911 and help him. Hippocratic oath requires it.

06/11/14 9:07 am

Nope. This sort of thing actually happens in real life.

If I have the tools and equipment available of course. As a doctor I would be bound by the Hippocratic oath.

Of course I help him, assuming I can appropriately without taking him to the hospital. I'm a doctor, it's what I do. I also report it. I'm sure he'll be discussing his situation with the nice policemen by the time we finish patching him up.

I'm in the minority on this one. It's not life threatening and I don't want to get involved in something illegal. I would try to talk him into going to the hospital.

I have stuff in my home that will work as an anasthetic, and I'm not a surgeon,

Help him, don't accept the cash.

And report him while he's under anesthetic.

06/11/14 6:21 am

You're the second person who believes surgeons have anesthetic in their homes.
Anesthesiologists handle the anesthesia, not surgeons. And they can't take it home with them.

06/11/14 6:25 am

If this guy is getting sewn up at a surgeons house, he's going to have to be awake.

Plus, any bad guy worth his salt isn't going to let anyone anesthetize him.

Vincere Seattle

I guess we'll have to use the poor man's anesthesia: vodka. Lots of vodka.

06/11/14 5:58 am

Of course I'd help him, I'd feel like I killed him myself if I didn't

06/11/14 6:22 am

But it's a non lethal wound, is he's not going to die. He probably just needs the bullet removed and to be sewn up.

JustBob Your anger fascinates me
06/11/14 5:19 pm

Eh, probably still do it

06/11/14 5:46 am

I would help him but I would find a way to suggest he goes to the hospital. If I feel threatened in any way find a way to take him to my office and get a colleague to come in too. Something to help my own situation.

06/11/14 5:47 am

Afterwards go to the police with the money and report it. If they can document a criminal activity happened, give them the money.
