Book readers: how long do you give a book to get good before you stop reading it?
It really depends. I usually put it down when it's so infuriating that I want to physically throw it at the wall. I did manage to make it through Twilight, though (for a friend). And I actually finished Fallen. I hated both.
Varies. Depends on how bad it it and who referred it.
100 or so pages. I can usually get a feel for it by then, even if it's just the writing style.
Depends on the book. Some, I can't even get past the first chapter. Others, I can force myself to read more in hopes it gets better.
Halfway through. Sometimes it takes a while to set things up. A good example is Gone Girl by Gillian Flynn. No spoilers, but those characters that seemed lame at first, turned int characters that made my draw drop later in the book. "She did what?"
That was a great book. Kind of a Dateline type story--one we have heard many times. And then a twist and it was a great story.
I do t want to give up in a book so I end up going halfway through it before I finally think this is getting ridiculous, but by then I'm already half way done, might as well finish...
I have to be honest, I always select books that I don't get bored of somehow.
Or maybe it's just impossible for me to get bored.
1st couple chapters or 25 pages. If it doesn't keep my interest I'm done with the book.
If the book hasn't captivated me in the first few chapters, it doesn't deserve to be read anymore. Or at least that's my philosophy.
I'll give it 2-3 chapters. If the author hasn't grabbed me by then, it's probably a no-win.
I finish almost everything.
On my Kindle I am usually reading 5 or so books at once. I read a chapter or a few in each book and skip around. That works well for me as long as the books are different subject matter. Some books take a long time.......
I'll go up to halfway, unless the book is particularly bad.
How can you give up? You never know - you might only be a page or so away from the best part. You cannot say a book is no good until you have read the whole thing.
If I've selected it I'm commented
I can usually tell within 30-40 pages.
I don't give up. I've read some pretty stupid books as a result.
I give my a book a day then if it still boring then I give up
Three chapters in if it isn't good by then I stop
1/3 of the book
Usually about 75-100 pages.
I usually finish all books I read.
About three chapters. If, by that point, I don't like the writing style or the story line ends up being unlikable, I'll try something else.
First couple of chapters..
I try and read about 5 pages in the store.
I hate giving up on a book. I have decided that if it hasn't grabbed me me page 100, it's not going to though.
If I don't give up after a page or two, I'm finishing it.
The last and only book I gave up on was "Under the Dome" by Steven King. I wanted to enjoy it, it had an interesting premise, I stopped reading after about 30 pages. King is too 'descriptive' for me.
I have that my bookshelf. I've been trying to decide if I want to read it or not. I think I'll pass
The TV show is good though.
I haven't watched it yet. I thought it was a mini series but I saw that the second season is coming out soon
Can't wait for the second season.
It varies. Until I feel like I've lost complete interest/can't tolerate another word.
One book took only a paragraph. Another I got 1/3 of the way through.
usually between 1/4 to 1/2 of the way. if its not good by then... meh.
around an hour.
Huh, funny that. Once I have read at least 3 pages, I generally finish the book one way or another.
I never give up. It would kill me and I would not be able to pick up another book until I finished it.
A chapter or two.
I still finish the book even if I hate it. Red Rising was a recent example of that.
I've only given up on one book, but I restarted it twice and gave it about 150 pages. It's a good book...just not my genre I guess. The Woman in White, by Wilkie Collins.
A few chapters. If I'm not interested by then, I have no motivation to finish it. I've never liked a book that I didn't like within the first 2 chapters.
Two or three hundred pages.
I'll generally try to read the whole thing once I start. I'll read every other chapter if it's really bad, and rarely I will just cut my losses and give up. Not often though.
One hour, if it doesn't have me hooked; I have a very long list of books on my too read list.
Two chapters maximum.
100 pages. I still usually finish, but I try to give it 100 pages.
Well I start if it doesn't get batter I usually go to the middle part if it's better I go back to where I left off and finish, if it's still not getting interesting I stop reading, and move to another book,
If I start, I typically finish the book. It will likely take the back burner, though.
Depends if it has a lot of cursing and I stop very close to right away. And if it's very graphic violence I stop right away. Usually I finish most of the books I start.
It depends on the book.
I finish every book I start
I'll give it a solid go, but if I forget to pick it up again in favor of another book, then that's the way it goes...
If I see artsy style that disrupts the narrative flow, or to many settings and jumps into past or future, less than five pages, otherwise about 20.
Usually about 100 pages. I keep hoping it will get better.
