A recent study shows that hurricanes named after females are more deadly than those named after men. The study also shows that this discrepancy is because people take hurricanes named after females less seriously. Is this evidence of sexism?
I think it is not "sexist" so to speak, it's just that people think of men as being more threatening (which in general they are- feminists don't try to say otherwise). I actually think this study is hilarious. Fix: Just name all hurricanes after men
The evidence is the evidence and is based on statistics. Therefore the evidence can't be sexist. The attitude of people in the path of gender named storms is what is sexist, on a fundamental level that most probably aren't aware of.
It could be that when warning systems were not as advanced that storms were deadlier & since they used to all have female names that it skewed the data.
There's a hurricAne south of me at the moment and it's named after me! I can be excited because it will break up before it hits land so it won't do any harm
That's cool! I was just saying earlier that I couldn't decide if I'd feel honored or horrified to have a hurricane with my name, but if it's a harmless hurricane, you can totally be excited!
