Japan, but since they no longer fear us enough to jump off cliffs China has plenty of room to catch up. Plus we sent Tom Cruise in as a Samuri to stir up dissent.

Depends on which generation you ask. The Greatest Generation will tell you Japan.

China prays for us. They pray for us to fail.

Japan, certainly for a good half-century until WWII.
But since then, China poses more and more of a threat to us. Considering their support for the Communist factions during the Korean War and Vietnam, I'd say they're definitely a bigger threat.

Historically speaking casualties between the US and Japan were heavier in WWII than the casualties between the US and China in the Korean War which is why I answered Japan though I'd say animosity between China and the US is worse now.

Do you mean throughout history or specifically in modern times?

I say Japan only due to war and lost of life.

China is our advisory only because they are so large. IMO

Very thought provoking series of questions.

You used the past tense in this question, therefore I believe it was Japan.

Still say Japan, but looking forward it will be China. We will both be valuable trading partners but China will have ann creasing need for resources which will put us at odds at the same time.

Wasn't China one of our allies during WWII? I do think we fought a mainly Chinese client state during Korean War and the Vietnam war so it does seem complicated. Yes Russia, then the USSR was involved as well still..... I'll have to think about it.

Japan actually owns a ton of the US debt. Also, while we get a lot of consumer goods from china they are cheaper versions of what the US can make. Japan at least has original technology we need.

JACK - read up on your history of US manufacturing. The Japanese tidal wave of products that overtook our country in the 70s-80s. The hostile buyouts of US firms, the corporate espionage. The collusion between Japanese firms to overtake US. That's

The economic portion. Politically, they of course attacked us, and I might be wrong, but really haven't been a big help on anything since.

I would argue Japan
