Should bioethical research fields like human cloning be legal assuming all test subjects are volunteers?
Cloning should be allowed for accidental deaths in your early stages of life.
We need to further science...
I'd let them clone me tomorrow.
Not so much humans, but I'd kinda like to see a T-Rex at the zoo.
I thought we were having an over population crisis!
the question does say LIKE human cloning. so I said yes. I don't think cloning should be explored but the curing of genetic diseases and such SHOULD be explored
So did U.S. slavery, Germans were, by far, not the first ones to do it, including the Jewish nation.
and Global warming was "SCARY" ... let's clone and genetically influence humans ... someone had that idea ... German EUGENICS anyone?
No one's playing God.
Anyone who utilizes a fertility clinic is playing god too. That is also genetic manipulation/ engineering. If you can't conceive naturally you are not meant to pass your genes on. I am sorry to say
@CDFL I actually believe they babies have given consent to be born. But that is another issue. I'm am 100% sure that they do not give consent to being experimented on.
It's never okay to put a baby in a blender.
That "Thou shalt not kill" stuff...
I meant that.
@cdfl: I'm quite positive babies don't volunteer to have their brains puréed with a food processor either. But that seems to be ok with many people. Just for clarification: When is it ok to choose which baby is born, and which goes into a bio-waste bag? I just want to keep with the latest trends.
News/prett/creoli- you mean like babies? They don't give consent to be born either.
How could a clone be a volunteer? That is stupid. NO!
NewsView, I couldn't have said it better!
Only if we can test biological weapons on convicted terrorists with the death penalty.
The human host may be a volunteer but the product of such research would not have asked to become the conscious outcome of genetic experimentation. When you have only one half of the whole giving consent that says nothing about the rights of or towrd the other half. Life should not be taken lightly.
Major issues with this one - he'll no!
Think about what cloning IS! IT'S NOT MEANT TO BE!!
I would totally volunteer for cloning.
Has anybody ever seen the 6th day? Stuff like that WOULD happen.
Not a lot could go wrong in research. We would be answering the questions.
TOO many scientific developments could come out of it not to.
I don't like the idea of cloning humans. To many things can go wrong. To many question unanswered. To much playing god.
@optimist6, they came from the unbiased, middle of the road, esteemed intellects from the highly rated TV show; The View.
Let's see.. We're giving all our jobs, and all our money to China, and we're going to let them make all the advances in science too. What does that leave us?
Oh yes, we have Jesus! He'll save us! Someone call Tibet and ask how you say "plz don't ban my religion" in Chinese.
RCPriest and Milkdud- does a retarded (or any) baby choose to be born? No.
Some fields, sure. But not any field which involves the sure, or likely, mutilation or destruction of human life including embryonic human life.
We would want people w the highest IQs to volunteer
Well, I think egomaniacs would volunteer.
Let me get this straight, I want to have a baby. I volunteer to be cloned and 9 months later they put my baby (clone of myself) in my arms and I drive off w/her ?
First peeing in the shower, then 10 or 6, and now this. Where do you get the questions- Good Morning America?
Milkdud, made the same point I was going. The life produced by cloning (which could be deformed, or in some way damaged) did not and could not volunteer. Not to mention things can be unethical even if everyone involved consents.
The only thing that would be confusing is when you clone your sled, you could be younger than your grandkids, so are they still your grandkids even though they could be the ones raising you?
This question doesn't make sense.
In human cloning we're creating a new person, albeit identical to the first, who can't volunteer to be created because they don't exist until after being created.
Who would volunteer but the poor and the stupid?
But I also think that there should never be a volunteer. Instead, let us use prisoners who have a long history of criminal activities to become test subjects. The citizens control the prisoner not the prisoner himself.
Yes. As long as the human has given their consent to volunteer. It is their choice not others.
bluwtrman- While a your view is a very cold and dark one, it is correct; and I fully agree with it.
I can see that human cloning can easily lead o disaster
Science has its own bounderies
@Dudley: we are past the natural selection stage as humans - anyone who can be kept alive will be.
Cloning is not the answer but genetic engineering will be.
Artificial selection replaces natural selection.
RonPaulGal- you overlook the fact we have been doing genetic engineering for millennia. Every time we plant the corn from the 3 ear stalk and not the 2 ear stalk, when we breed the better producing milk cow and not the lower one, etc. What's the diff?
Several peeps have said no to cloning because of natural selection but every time we go to extraordinary lengths to keep a premature baby alive we are doing the same thing. That baby stays alive and passes along the genetics that weakens the race instead of quietly dying off and killing the gene.
Wouldn't cloning with volunteers , imperfect and ill-designed human intentions eventually run contrary to natural selection? It would serve to eventually create a class of egomaniacal leaders, most of whom look alike.
If they wanna do it, fuckin let em do it.
