I would call him an artist or musical artist but not a musician because he's not using an instrument to create an original sound.

Scratch DJs are a dying breed of artists. That is a skill that takes lifelong practice. Different fades, mixes, Etc. they create a masterpiece LIVE in front of tour eyes. So yes, absolutely.

How about losing the moniker of DJ. I can't keep up with all of the names. Primarily cos they all start with DJ. If everyone's name started with Bob, I'd never remember anyone's name. Although, Bob is a pretty cool name. Hey, I'll be DJ Bob. Falling the trest of this with commas cos I like that,,,,,

If I take a bunch of someone else's photos and glue them to a wall, artistically, that doesn't make me a photographer, so no.

I was torn... I don't think they're necessarily musicians because they're not playing an instrument or singing, but artists, yes. They can turn music into something almost entirely different.

I'm a big fan of the DJ scene. I will say that there are a lot people that write and perform some great sht that only gets noticed because of these DJs. The music scene is broken. There is so much talent out there but they are suppressed by the people in power, in that industry. Sad.

It depends. In some cases it can really be a form of music (or at least sound). Often it isn't. However, when done skillfully sampling and even remixing (which do take talent to do well) can be musical.

Some djs are very talented... Remixing music to make it better than the original. Many DJs are musically gifted and well known: David Guetta, Tiesto, etc.

Not to mention I've never heard anything complex come from any music a dj remixes. It's all "bass, snare, bass, snare, bass, snare..."

Hitting buttons to match up with a moving dot is not the same as complex rhythms and tones. As a musician, I recognize them as musicians that have worked tirelessly as I have on my compositions and arrangements.

I agree. But you do have to play a musical instrument to be considered a musician. Last I checked a CD player isn't a musical instrument.

Stringed instruments ARE instruments played by real musicians. The "spinny thingies" are nothing more than a CD player. To call a dj a musician is a insult to real musicians. That's like calling someone who plays Guitar Hero a musician.

You don't have to make original music to be a musician. Go look up what the definition of a musician is before you vote.

Hahaha not at all. I like how DJ's think they're important for playing music. You're no cool. And you're not an artist. Try another way to get laid.

There are some DJs like Armin Van Buuren, Tiesto, Robert Miles, Vangelis....among others who I would consider great musicians. Not sure how much of their music they make or produce but the end result is amazing. Great to dance to or listen to and get lost in your thoughts.
