I would call him an artist or musical artist but not a musician because he's not using an instrument to create an original sound.

I swear people who use this app are fucktards! It takes creativity to sample multiple songs and make them into your own! J Dilla, Pete Rock, ect. Wake up ignorant masses!

Scratch DJs are a dying breed of artists. That is a skill that takes lifelong practice. Different fades, mixes, Etc. they create a masterpiece LIVE in front of tour eyes. So yes, absolutely.

David guetta... No...

What "talent" is required to scramble someone else's work into gibberish?

Instagram doesn't make you a photographer. Auto tune doesn't make you a singer. Mixing isn't creating.

It makes them posers. A mash up or remix is something any idiot with the right app can do. Art is creation.

It makes them composers.

Artists, yes. Musicians ... it depends.

01/06/13 9:20 am

How about losing the moniker of DJ. I can't keep up with all of the names. Primarily cos they all start with DJ. If everyone's name started with Bob, I'd never remember anyone's name. Although, Bob is a pretty cool name. Hey, I'll be DJ Bob. Falling the trest of this with commas cos I like that,,,,,

If I take a bunch of someone else's photos and glue them to a wall, artistically, that doesn't make me a photographer, so no.

Artists yes, musicians no.

The Beatles, to quote Tom Morello, are over-rated.

I prefer the term borrowed. ;)

I would use the term 'artist' over 'musician'. It still takes creative skills, but not necessarily musical abilities.

I was torn... I don't think they're necessarily musicians because they're not playing an instrument or singing, but artists, yes. They can turn music into something almost entirely different.

I'm a big fan of the DJ scene. I will say that there are a lot people that write and perform some great sht that only gets noticed because of these DJs. The music scene is broken. There is so much talent out there but they are suppressed by the people in power, in that industry. Sad.

01/04/13 11:19 pm

Artists maybe but if they can't play an instrument also then not a musician.

01/04/13 11:01 pm

All art is stolen from somewhere

01/04/13 9:10 pm

It depends. In some cases it can really be a form of music (or at least sound). Often it isn't. However, when done skillfully sampling and even remixing (which do take talent to do well) can be musical.

If they ONLY do, not at all, but I have friends who do but are actually really good at just about any style of guitar.

01/04/13 7:45 pm

Exactly. Armin, Tiesto...

I think those who voted NO just aren't familiar with all that talented 21st century DJs (like David Guetta) do.

01/04/13 6:17 pm

Some djs are very talented... Remixing music to make it better than the original. Many DJs are musically gifted and well known: David Guetta, Tiesto, etc.

01/04/13 5:34 pm

What does a dj do other than sync a very generic drum beat over someone else's creation?

01/04/13 5:15 pm

Not to mention I've never heard anything complex come from any music a dj remixes. It's all "bass, snare, bass, snare, bass, snare..."

01/04/13 5:13 pm

Sorry friend, but no real musicians considers a dj a musician.

Hitting buttons to match up with a moving dot is not the same as complex rhythms and tones. As a musician, I recognize them as musicians that have worked tirelessly as I have on my compositions and arrangements.

I don't consider dubstep producers just your regular dj. however, both are generally musicians.

01/04/13 4:58 pm

little talent???? ok.....sure

01/04/13 4:27 pm

No what they do takes little talent. The Beatles have talent, probably the greatest band ever.

DrReid Ever present.
01/04/13 4:04 pm

Exactly, in many ways they are even more talented.

01/04/13 3:58 pm

I agree. But you do have to play a musical instrument to be considered a musician. Last I checked a CD player isn't a musical instrument.

01/04/13 3:55 pm

Would you call someone who plays Rock Band or Guitar Hero a musician? Hell no.

01/04/13 3:52 pm

Stringed instruments ARE instruments played by real musicians. The "spinny thingies" are nothing more than a CD player. To call a dj a musician is a insult to real musicians. That's like calling someone who plays Guitar Hero a musician.

01/04/13 3:12 pm

Its the computer who does all the work.

01/04/13 3:07 pm

You don't have to make original music to be a musician. Go look up what the definition of a musician is before you vote.

01/04/13 2:57 pm

Sure. Guitar is to Computer as chords are to recorded songs.

Hahaha not at all. I like how DJ's think they're important for playing music. You're no cool. And you're not an artist. Try another way to get laid.

01/04/13 12:16 pm

Very talented but not musicians

coming from a musician, I'd have to say no. this doesn't mean that some djs don't put out cool stuff. but some of it is also bs.

Artists not musicians

01/04/13 10:29 am

There are some DJs like Armin Van Buuren, Tiesto, Robert Miles, Vangelis....among others who I would consider great musicians. Not sure how much of their music they make or produce but the end result is amazing. Great to dance to or listen to and get lost in your thoughts.
