Are you aware that (other than being a member of the team) Olympic athletes do not have to be associated with the country they represent in the Olympics?

Yes, and I wish they'd take it another step and get rid of the flag waving BS altogether. It should just be a showcase if the best, regardless of where they're from, at least in individual events.

I agree but It's a huge positive draw to root for your team.

Lenix lewis ( world class jerk) boxed for canada in the games years ago hes from some carribian country but lives ( now anyway) in england. I think canada had a runner from there too but that didnt end well.

I think there are a few athletes from India competing independent of any country.

Yes. They have done this for years. Russian skaters train in Hackensack NJ. Russian gymnasts train in Denver (I think) with the Karoly wife whose husband trained Nadia. Seems to be happening more and more.

That's a dumb rule. Persons should be required to be citizens of the country they represent.

The Olympic rules allow for any athlete to play for any country. The decision is usually made by the Olympic Committees for the individual countries. The Olympic Charter states that the games are competition among athletes; not countries.
