Have you ever been a contestant on a game show? (Link to my own game show experience in the comments)
My mom was on the Merv Griffin show
The pots were the one thing I declined. They were a ~$2,000 pot set that I would have had to pay ~$350-$500 for. Had I known I would get a check instead of car, I would have gotten the pot set.
The same thing happened with my great-aunt, I think. She had to turn down the video camera she won since she had to pay 75 extra for that.
I also got to rise the canoe that she won, but it was blue since they gave her to choose which color it was
Those were expensive pots. Why so my much tax. Hey all I ever won in life was a purple Eyeore when I was five.
I believe it. Little known fact about the prizes that many forget is the taxes. I also had a choice of color for the car before they offered the check to me. Would have been blue.
It's a combination of the state taxes and federal taxes that would have needed to be paid. Something like 10% for california and 10-15% for federal, depending on the tax bracket.
Remember when Oprah gave everyone "free cars". People were mad as hell at all the tax they had to pay
I do remember that! Kind of amusing, really. "Nothing's free", I guess...
In this clip, I'm the third person on contestant row. I'm wearing the gold shirt that says "The Army Loves Bob!"
Wow, it's cool that you won some stuff Matt! :-D
My grandfather's older sister Lee was on daytime Wheel of Fortune in the 70's.
Yeah, I actually made it to the show case show down where (spoiler alert) I over bid by about $3.5K. Oh well, it was a blast anyways and I won the car along with that other stuff. It was quite an experience! Checked off bucket list at age 20!
So glad you had fun!
Thats amazing Matt! You are a cutie too. Did they give you a certificate for the car?
Due to an issue working with the local dealerships up here, they gave me a check, minus state taxes, for the car in the amount of $13,802.24 . When you're 20, that's enough to make your jaw drop!
:-D thanks for the compliment! ;-)
So you didn't have to pay taxes being they took it off. And how were those pots
