Are you in favor of banning marriage between two consenting adults who are related because their children will almost certainly be genetically defected?

IDGAF if they have defective children. I hardly see that as being different from most children in this country.

Just because a couple gets married, it doesn't mean they're going to have kids.

According to a study published in the Journal of Genetic Counseling, the typical risk of serious birth defects in children is 2.6%. For first cousins it's 4.6% and for the child of siblings the odds are only 9-11%.

Many groups have much worse odds of having children with birth defects, such as smokers, drinkers, women over 40, people with a family history of cancer, workers in risky industries, hemophiliacs, drug users, etc.

Not for that reason alone. Imagining a scenario where the two do not have a broad worldview, to pair them together would not be of benefit to either.

My answer is for THAT reason, no, but I don't think relatives should be getting married.

Govt should not be involved in this. The only problem I have with this - sick or not sick defective genes or not I feel it is morally wrong and would not want my daughter marrying her uncle, brother, or grandfather.

What they are actively reproducing? Do you think that is grounds for the gov't to step in?

Where is the source that they would be "certainly genetically defected" I know the chances are higher but I don't think it's certain.

It isn't certain. That part was included just for the sake of argument. This is a semi-series of polls trying to prove the illegitimacy of the argument that potential genetic defect of potential offspring is reason enough to ban a certain marriage.

Brother and sister? That should almost certainly produce genetic defects. Well, I am not a doctor either.
