Your jovial teenage friend is convinced you have interest in someone you don't, blissfully spreading the word. How do you shut it down without ending up insulting that person too much?

Start worse rumors about the friend. They'll stop.

I've been the butt of this. Some bitch spread a rumor when I was in HS that I was telling people I was dating this guy I had a crush on. When I asked WTF was going on she wouldn't say. I found out from him, himself. I was so mortified I cried for days. I was so glad she moved a few months lat

later. I would beat the living shit out of someone who did this. it really depends on the person. Some people can handle it better than others.

my friends are a good natured bunch. I just give them a little glare, tell them to knock it off and they start laughing and stop spreading the rumor

Start a rumor of your own?

Go kiss said person in a public place. The rumor will be dispelled once you get slapped.

Ha ha, the perils of being a teenager. Where things that don't matter much are so important. Don't worry what someone says about you, if others really want to know, they'll ask you.

Explain how you view them as a friend and don't want a relationship now anyways

In my experience (when I was a teen), rumors always trumped fact. I haven't seen any signs that it's gotten better. Good luck.

Approach the person who you "like", if they are a friend, and explain and laugh with them about it.
