BC and AD or BCE and CE?
Can't we stick to bc/ad just because it's convention?
I think "just because it's convention" is a very poor reason to do anything.
Convention is why we drive on the right hand side of the road... Sometimes you just have to stick to something once everyone starts using it.
Again, I think that's very poor reason to do anything. Unless there's good reason we do what we do, we should be open to change.
Convention is a reason, live with it
It's a reason. Just a poor one. Where would the world be if we never changed anything because it was convention or tradition?
Okay nice point;)
If we didn't stick to convention you'd have a hard time plugging anything in.
In my college classes i make a point of using ad and bc.
My reason isnt religious either, far from it. I dont believe there is anything "common" about 0"ce" all the way onward to 2014"ce". And likewise i dont find anything uncommon about any "bce" date. Its a very lazy and tired attempt to remove
Any religious reference from our dating system. And as susan said, 0ce is STILL roughly the same date as the birth of christ, so go figure.
I don't care that much, and since they refer to the same events, I don't really see what difference it makes. I'd much rather deal with extracting "under God" from the Pledge and "In God We Trust" from our money, frankly, and I don't
really see those as terribly high priorities either (mainly because I think it would cause more aggravation than satisfaction).
we could date using A.U.C.
