Does the poll rating system discourage user's from asking certain questions for fear of being "disliked" (Low rating)?

I get really intrigued when people down rate my questions, and I have a theory why they do it

I rate down your questions because I hate following you but I dare not unfollow you. (They could be watching.) Instead, I punish you for being just the you that you are.

I only do if the answers don't make sense to the question. The biggest one is where people ask a this or that question with a yes or no answer. Like "do you prefer pizza or pasta" and the answers are "yes" and "no". Yes is answering which one?

But otherwise if it is a legit question even if I disagree with it I still don't downgrade. The downgrades are typically the PC crowd that doesn't like anything that hurts their sensibilities.

Yes, I do prefer one over the other. No, I do not have a preference.

Yes to pizza or yes to pasta? No to pizza or no to pasta?

Well, if you're trying to answer the wrong question you have lots of options. I was trying to break down the correct question.

I think Tony floated the idea of numbers liked vs disliked similar to the comments like button. I kinda think that would be better as the app grows.

It let's me know if people like my questions.

I usually have unbiased questions, but if I do make a biased question, it is usually down rated.

Not if they have guts, who cares what others think? The weak I guess.

There are people that just vote questions down because of the asker.

It doesn't discourage me.

Possibly, but they shouldn't be hindered by that. The rating system can be helpful, but since it seems that people misuse it for exactly that kind of reason, there's no reason to take it that seriously when considering what polls to create.

Not any more. I don't use it and I don't pay attention to my ratings.

The rating is meaningless. Seemingly 10% or so users actually up or down vote a poll.

I agree, although most aren't like us, I was speaking with a friend who uses the app and refuses to post certain questions for fear of being down voted.

Ask them if it will affect their GPA or their income earning potential. If not, why worry?

This is a place to wonder and learn. They need to embrace the anonymity.

Also, who are they? Let them know I upvote every single poll to counteract the haters.

I've explained that to them a few times. They read my polls frequently so if they would like to say who they are I'm sure they'll comment. I let them know there's free upvotes for em if they do.

Case in point here; as of this timestamp, 44 votes and 5 people up or down vote.

Yea it doesn't bother me. Sometimes I am curious as to why someone dislikes it but it doesn't go further than that for me.

I'm just giving evidence how unrepresentative the figure is.
