Another BJS report shows that of all violent crime committed between 1993-2001, only 9.5% were committed with a firearm of any type. Of that, 8.2% were with a handgun, 1.1% were with an "other gun." Violent crimes committed with no weapon were 65.9%.

Comparing the two over the same time period (1993-2001), there were 8,896,460 acts of violent crime. There were 162,030 homicides (or 1.82%). Of those, there were 115,211 homicides committed by any firearm (1.3%). There were 22,577 homicides...

Committed with "other guns" (0.25%) and 92,634 committed with handguns (1.04%).

I misspoke. The 8,896,460 was an ANNUAL AVERAGE, not the total for the period from 1993-2001. Therefore, averaging all of the data for the same period, there was an average of 12,801 homicides committed by a firearm (0.14%)...

Of which, 10,293 were committed with a handgun (0.12%), and 2,509 were committed with an "other gun" (0.03%). So there you have it. It's actually far lower than previously thought.

Did you already have this planned or was it inspired by my other comment about hammers being used more than handguns in homicides? :)

Planned. I had to pick a topic for an essay for my English class. :-)
