Should Indian Reservations be abolished?
Those in favor of taking the Indian's land back: are you in favor of Mexico doing the same. Seems the US has held California long enough. Yes?
No, how else are they going to get into nice restaurants?
they deserve to have governance over their tribes, but I would argue that they deserve better land to live off of.
The UN ruled two years ago that the US needs to return more land to the native population.
the fact it was the un alone probably means it wont happen
Would you give up your house and/or property to somewhat amend injustices that happened over a century ago?
I would be for breaking the treaties. It was a mistake to not put a 100 yr sunset clause into them in the first place. The natives needed temporary protection, not pseudo-sovereign nation status. The land should be treated the same as all other land.
Each tribe could divvy up the reservations among its members and then the members could sell it or keep it as they wished. If the tribes wish to hold onto their cultures, then that's their business, not our governments. There should be no legal ...
...differences between American citizens of native descent or American citizens of any other descent. Everyone should be treated the same. The tribal system that we so wrongly put in place years ago does not enable this equality.
They want to be "sovereign nations"? Fine, put up barbed wire fence around them and require a passport to leave or enter.
Some people think they should. I'm not sure your have to ask them
Where else could the drink.
Thanks. If I may ask what is your view on the topic?
I'm torn, promise and all, but I believe the land is simply symbolic as it stand, their land? That we still mine for coal and uranium. How are the school systems there? I don't feel the best way to honor them is to stash them away in the most
Desolate rural places in the country.
By abolishing the reservation, does that mean the natives are integrated with the rest of the nation?
Are you meaning as in they have to leave the land forcibly or what?
Not at all. They stay right where they are. Their property is their property. They simply lose all benfits and entitlements that people of none native descent cant utilize.
Yes, the natives stay but non natives can move in and start building, working and owning property too. It might actually increase wealth and living standards by doing that.
You say that as if its a bad thing. Let me tell you something: equality is never a bad thing.
No. I would like my own reservation, though.
are you a native american or just wanting to set up a libertarian experiment?
If I'm both can we work something out?
Haha yes. Libertyland has no immigration policy. All are free to come and go as they wish.
Ok good, let's do this lol
not unless something is done to make things equal or better for them
No way. People seem to forget this whole damn country was built on the oppression of minorities, then the moment we let them actually keep a small sliver of something, it's "unfair."
However if someone just opposes gambling and casinos all together it's different. But that will still never overpower the sentiment in my first statement, for me personally.
Take the last little piece of the land given them by the last treaty we haven't yet broken? That anyone in this country even hesitates to oppose this to their last dying breath is why it is so embarrassing to admit
I'm from here.
yeah, sometimes this country, for all its good, can be rather negative. We don't have to like the bad parts of our history, but we can't ignore it either.
Of course not. It's all they have left.
agreed. I have no issue trying to help them, I'm sure you don't either. Lets face it, there are rampant issues with Indians that mainstream society largely ignores. I don't think this is the solution, though I have heard it.
I don't believe that would help them
I don't think ti would either. Some people I know think it would, but then again, I rarely agree with them about anything
Follow me for all the wily no tax related polls you could ever desire.
And the casinos too.
I'm curious, is your issue with indian casinos the gambling or the owner?
It seems unfair to me that we have singled out one race and allow only them to own gaming centers in most states. People would be up in arms if we said only whites can own retail stores and blacks get all construction operations.
I agree with Dave. But I'm also against gambling and would like to ban casinos and the lottery. Gambling steals money from poor people and people who can't do math. It's also a family & community destroying addiction.
DaveL...did you forget we HAVE said only whites could own certain things? We STOLE everything they had from the moment the "Americans" aka wealthy white men stepped foot on this land. If anything the deserve more.
Definitely disagree Cami.
That's why my comment was for DaveL. You seem to have different reasoning towards disliking them and his is the one I saw issue with.
Unless you agree with him, then I'm not sure how you can disagree with my comment considering it's plain history.
Cami, I'm proud of our history, warts and all. But I don't take kindly to the idea that the white people who settled and made this great country are evil. And I'm a proud Cherokee Indian.
Good for you. You can have a positive attitude all you want but that doesn't change what actually happened.
I'm proud of who we are today, but not of how we got here. Nobody should be proud of how we got here.
Very much disagree.
I've heard a few people I know suggest this.
