It was reported recently that Owsley County in Kentucky has the highest food stamp usage in the nation. It's also 95% Republican. Does this demographic surprise you, considering Republican views toward government entitlement programs?
Republicans don't hate welfare. Democrats rate their success on how many people are on welfare, Republicans by how many get off welfare (because they used it as a leg up and don't need it amymore).
explain to me how pointing out that the people who complain the most about entitlements are the ones who tend to be on welfare is inclusive and bigoted?
It's federal spending on all levels. That includes farm subsidies, military spending which has been big for the last 12 years, if the state has an Indian reservation, retirement pay, Social Security payments, Medicare. If you look at population
these states have very high populations of minorities. Then there are the food stamp and welfare payments. It's not about which state pays more it's about where our government does business, which states our more likely to have farms.
which state has a high population if minorities? You're a moron. CA, FL, NY etc have a HIGH populations of minorities. States like Kentucky do not. Mississippi does not.
Back up your retarded statement with evidence. I want to see that proven
It makes me curious as to the facts of the case. Highest per capita but a population of 100 people? I'd like to look into the demographics and statistics.
The truly poor will sign up for what they need. It doesn't matter who they vote for.
Your premise is that repubs shouldn't get food stamps because they hate entitlements is wrong. The people who want to get off of these is who I think should get it
Not at all. Right wingers are against all government entitlements*
*except whatever entitlement they receive, because that one is obviously legit. The rest of them are used by moochers and should be stopped immediately!!
Doesn't really surprise me: Parts of Red America can be quite poor, and are generally conservative. Of course it would be hypocritical if an individual receiving government aid in such an area suggested someone elsewhere should be denied the same.
And 8 of the top 10 states receiving SNAP benefits are Red States. The same states that receive more tax $ than they send to DC. What does this mean? Somebody is not walking their talk.
Tom, as others have stated, many of the poor that do support the Republican Party also believe there should be cuts in government spending unless it applies to them. But, the high income Democrats are less likely to complain about their tax bill.
Because support for food stamps has nothing to do with liking/agreeing with/etc. the people who need them. It's to do with recognizing that poverty and hunger are correlated with crime and economic instability and therefore we should try to mitigate.
I actually think food stamps should stay. I usually argue with those who believe charities could take over or for some other reason believe it's not necessary at all.
Surprised? Not in the slightest.
I bet they bitch about government spending & increasing taxes on the wealthy too. Still wouldn't be surprised.
Irrational has become a way of life to many of these people.
Not really. I think they're used to doing as they're told. The faces in the crowd at a typical Teabertarian rally don't look much like what you'd expect the job creators or corporations/people in the 1% the party most enthusiastically represents.
No. They likely all feel they are worthy recipients, not like those lazy people they heard about. Other people are moochers and freeloaders. They are just temporarily embarrassed millionaires.
Most Kentuckians don't mind about white people receiving government aid; they just don't like the ideal of blacks and foreigners receiving government aid.
Well, Owsley County is in the Appalachian section of KY. Y'know, the poor, redneck, Mountain Dew Mouth part. And it only has 5000 people living in it. of course there would be republicans.
