Today, a 51 year old man in Key West was arrested for being belligerent during a police check. He's charged with felony assault on a LEO and resisting arrest. He's listed as "disabled". Do we grant disability status too easily?

Granted, there are many fakers on disability. But there are also many, many of us who deserve it and need it desperately. Tighten the examination process if possible without denying legitimate claims.

It amazes me how many civilians are "disabled"and get paid monthly by the federal government but Military members lose legs/arms/sight etc and the government looks for ways to delay their benefits an most aren't considered "disabled". It sickens me!

Yes. Though I don't know this case was abuse.

I agree it is impossible to tell whether this is was a justified arrest and the guy was being a jackass or if this was somehow police abuse

We do, but I'd have to know more about the arrest to have an opinion on it.

Yes. I qualify, would you let me off? Serious question. And you've read my comments. :)

Maybe, but I also want to receive disability checks. I regularly fail the reality check so I'm mentally disabled, fork over some money, dear government ;)

I hear you. Won't happen. :)

I don't have any idea why that man is listed as disabled, or what that has to do with the rest of the question.

My thoughts, having seen the man and the fact that he fought means he's not freaking disabled but able bodied, he's not crazy either. So why disabled? They should check again.

I really have no idea what goes into a "disabled" classification, who makes that decision, or what it means for those with the designation.

Basically means you are unable to work and receive benefits.

Yes, and its abused by many. The same holds true for charitable status.

Indeed. I've seen this man a few times. He's fit and a strong b...d. Disabled? Not physically. Not sure about mental.
