Do you think it is sometimes possible to tell a sunrise from a sunset in a picture without obvious clues like the exact location where it was taken? Link in comments, my Android SoH app still won't work right.

Did you try Un-installing the app and reinstalling after a reboot of your phone? There's also a new official version on Google play if you haven't updated yet either.

The colors of a sunrise is completely different than a sunset. Well I can tell the difference at least.

Near water, there is often mist during a sunrise that isn't there by sunset.

That is just a shoot from the hip answer.

Is it weird that this is a topic that I've often thought about?

Not really, what is weird to me is that there are internet sites actually covering this, I thought it's only me who thinks you can tell the difference.

Interesting, my first thought was sunrise when I saw the picture. It would be interesting to test more pictures.

Inspired by an artwork I recently saw, sorry not online. The deep ruddyness immediately made me think sunset. I think it's possible and would like a test with a few dozen images but have found none so far.
