The fiscal cliff deal that will be voted on by Congress Monday and Tuesday would raise income tax rates (to 39.6%) and capital gains tax (to 20%) on households above $450,000 and defer most spending cuts pending further negotiations. Approve?

The same tax rate theory only works when the guy who after taxes makes 45,000 with 2 kids does not have to pay for 1. health insurance 2. Dental 3. QUALITY education...amongst other reasonable mandatory things. Now that 45,000 can be used to live rather than barely survive. I'm just saying.

There is a reason they would be making 450,000 and the same for 50,000. How about we treat everyone in the country fairly. Let's not attack the wealthy for their wealth lets accept them as productive members of society like you and I.

How about we all pay the same percent since we all live in the same freakin country! People confuse percentages with amount paid. 10% of 50,000 is 5,000 10% of 500,000 is 50,000. How is this not fair? Both pay their dues in a fair manner. What ever the percent it should be across the board.

The middle-class is shrinking already. Imagine what the size of the middle class be if Congress did nothing and the Bush tax cuts on the middle class expired.

If I was in Congress and this bill was voted on without the weary of going over the fiscal cliff, I would have voted no. However, with the current situation, I would have voted yes to this imperfect plan. If the US went over the fiscal cliff, there would be a tax increase on the middle class.

......Everyone has access to their Congressman. Call, email, write a letter, be proactive. But seriously, most of your ideas, though they sound good on paper, wouldn't work in the real world. So put on your thinking cap. Maybe you will be the person who comes up with the help our Congress so needs.

So....when do we grow up and start acting like an adult? Our society is one of complainers and whiners. We're out for "number one" and forget about everyone else. If you're not happy then come up with some REAL solutions. Research your ideas to see if they will actually work.

..all of those expensive doctor college loans. Why should A be punished for working hard? Why doesn't the government control it's spending? Why should the hard workers pay extra money? Who knows?

Anesthesiologist: 16 years of college and residency
Nurse: 4 years of college
A: +350000 pay
N: maybe 90000 pay
A went to college x4 as long as N. A can make up to x4 of N on salary too. But the Government wants 1/3 of A money because they are rich. A now has less money to pay back...

The CBO just released its estimate that the fiscal cliff deal just passed will add $4 trillion to the national debt over the next 10 years. As I thought.

They managed to sneak in extensions for 50 corporate tax subsidies, including the one used by GE to avoid paying ANY US taxes...

You have to realize that we really don't elect our rulers anymore. You forget the fourth branch of the government: the media. We are well on our way to a fascist society if we don't change course now.

These new tax hikes plus the ones just coming into effect under Obamacare put high earners well above the Laffer curve and will probably produce LESS revenue, not more. No one seems to remember the lesson of the "luxury tax" of the 70s.

Losing a big chunk of salary is still better than when the economy slows down and you lose your $50k job and ALL your income.

I still don't know if I approve or not so I will keep switching my answer every time I open SOH. I guess it's better than doing nothing, but not by much. The whole dysfunctional way it went down really pisses me off too. Can't decide if its better than another downgrade, double-dip, etc etc.

Unfortunately, I don't think it's that thy are stupid... I think they are just smart enough to know they will individually get their butts kicked next election if they don't do nothing.

Truly disappointed, again, with our inability to actually elect people who can do their job. The tax increase on the wealthy is fine with me, but on its own, without serious adjustment to spending AND other options for income, this is a waste of time.

They are raising taxes and not cutting government spending. So they can spend even more of our money. Sounds great.

How did the Democrats lose anything? NO spending cuts. Significant tax hikes on the wealthy. Not as high as you wanted, but still high. How is that not acceptable? That would be like Republicans complaining about a bill with ZERO tax hikes and significant spending cuts because the cuts were too low!

It'd be great if we had representatives in Congress who had actually worked in a real job. I believe the Founders wanted "regular" folks to head to Washington to represent their constituents. Not career politicians. These guys will no doubt try to look like heroes for the last minute deal.

Of course all those extra Obamacare taxes will apply to the majority of us also. Also all the extra taxes and costs for healthcare companies will also apply to the majority of us who pay for healthcare. People are really gonna wonder why their pay checks still went down even with this deal.

Jonny, that has tone the most ridiculous thing I've ever read. Not only do you have to pay 80% of this countries taxes but then we're also going to say that you use them most too. By what, driving to work on the roads I'm paying for? Ooh, nothing like living my whole life sucking people dry!
