Beyond all of this, to ask anyone 18th century American mind to even comprehend the America we live in today is a stretch. At any rate, Washington would be proud of the free market nation he created but not the social welfare state it has become.

adam112
09/07/12 6:36 pm

My far left professor admitted to my class that the founding fathers never envisioned the social welfare state that we have today. Washington, regardless of whether he was deist or Christian or some sort of moderation, would be appalled at the anti-religious sentiment in this country.

Anyone who says "yes" to this poll is a terrible student of history. For one, Washington hated the idea of political parties and was libertarian in that he believed we should not get involved in foreign affairs; we do both of those things...

Of course he would be proud! Are you kidding? When he passed away, America was a weak, fledging country in the middle of nowhere. We've abolished slavery, empowered women, quadrupled in size, and lead the world in every discipline, including science, innovation military, business, and freedom

@CAR who the heck do you think you are? George Washington started this country. without him, where would we be? shut your mouth and think before you go around our nation's founder.

Yes and no. Proud of its economic growth and resistance to foreign influence. Sad for its growth of government, high taxation and loss of freedom, morality and virtue.

I think him and ALL his contemporaries would completely freak out, maybe even become ill, at how this country's Supreme Court has applied the Constitution over the last century.

@Responsible he was saying how Washington would feel. And he is probably right.

@Responsible. Remember, back in the 1700's their attitudes towards blacks were ALOT different then they are today..and women could not vote. And I think Washington freed his slaves at one point

George Washington didn't believe in the party system. I think he would be disappointed in that aspect, since today you only count if you're hard left or hard right, otherwise you aren't fairly represented.

"Wait a minute, there are no slaves?! And women are equals?! And the blacks too?!" - George Washington

If the Founders saw the US today they might just break down and cry. $15 trillion in debt, a central bank, indefinite detention, endless wars, wiretapping, kill lists, redistribution of wealth, TSA, drug war, SCOTUS "interpreting" the Constitution how they want, President w/ unlimited power, etc...

When he would first look at it he'd be like "damn, this country turned out to be the strongest country in the world, and I was a major part of that". Of course he'd be proud! We live like kings!!!
But if he'd take a longer look at things, he'd be disappointed in how things are run
