I’m only able to because I’m on disability, lame in a leg and walk with a cane/trekking poles. I do move thru the woods like I used to but still enjoy it. Years ago I could do 15-20 miles a day easily. Today 10-12 would be the max. Years ago I was only free during winter months to hike, some nasty conditions then.

Yeah, kids have it good nowadays. They can just go on youtube and watch videos. I had to clean our entire house every week and do all the laundry and dishes to earn $5 a week to pay for my own piano lessons every other week! 😂🤣😂

Wood working or travel from the list would definitely be things I could get interested in rather quickly. I love traveling, and while I have the money now, it would not be sustainable. I had a friend offer to teach me how to do blacksmithing, and another to weld. Woodworking sounds very good too, definitely something to look into. Thank you for your answer!

The hard part is realizing that the thing you can’t get enough of is something that you can actually teach yourself to do. The resources are there if you can figure out what gets you excited.

I have one already, but didn’t know the best way to start learning as I cannot fit timetabled lessons easily into my schedule. I could go off of YouTube and books and do it in my own time. Thank you for your answer.

Those sound like great options! I hadn’t thought about blacksmithing or welding. Both of those could be lucrative as well as a hobby! More so welding, because welders get paid good money, but blacksmithing if you have a historical site nearby that does demonstrations. We’ve been to some of those and it’s fun to watch!
Woodworking can be very lucrative, also, and could be something you do on the side. We’ve lived in a couple of pastoriums (church owned homes) that had GORGEOUS floor to ceiling cabinets, under stove drawers for pots and pans, and wooden pass throughs to dens or dining rooms.
If you have the option of free lessons from a friend, that would definitely cut down on your costs!
You’re very welcome! I fall into that needlework list! 😂🤣😂 I’ve also done some crafts.

You’re certainly welcome!
Now I have a million questions! 😂🤣😂
How long have you been there, and why did you leave the US? Are you intending on gaining citizenship, or is this short term? Do you care to share where in the UK? I have a daughter and SIL that visited Wales recently.
How do you feel about Brexit?
Is the immigration problem as bad as it sounds, with countries losing their identities?
Is the media there as derogatory toward Trump as it is here?
Is the coronavirus taking more hold there than it is here?
..

I have the Maker. It can cut so many materials. I'm particularly loving working with adhesive vinyl at the moment. I haven't tried the heat transfer vinyl for t-shirts yet, but that's next.

You could make cheese at home. It’s funny you can get quite a variety. I would imagine you could probably get some Irish milk and milk from other countries too. The quality of the soil makes a difference. Sourdough bread is another thing that’s fun. My climate , Oregon coast, it’s very similar to that of England. Day hikes. If the calories would allow I would like to try out different kinds of chocolate too.

Lots of books on how to build furniture, the down side is the equipment needed be costly. Although I think 3-5k outdoor be enough to get you started.

I hear you like woodworking, UKGuy. I enjoy making wooden rings sometimes. The only thing that stops me is cost, since I don't own a wood lathe not have the money for one. I've been turning rings on a drill press, which works, bust isn't ideal for this type of work. I'm sure you can find a good lathe for under $500, though.

90% of my gun hobby is handguns and “assault rifles” and my everyday pocket knives I rotate are 3+ inch blades and “switch blades” spring action side folders though not the stiletto type. But any auto knife can be bought as a manual usually.
Shooting for a hobby really should consist of more than just trigger pulling for it to be a proper hobby. Unless you’re just doing a lot of drill work, but that’s usually done with handguns/“assault style” weapons.
Long range shooting could be a good option for you if you have access to that kind of range. Reloading (ammo making) is good fun, and that can either be making lots of cheap ammo for plinking, or really accurate high quality stuff for long range shooting.
I reload also so I can shoot more, mainly pistol ammo and 1 speciality caliber that’s just too expensive to buy.

I will have to look into it. I have no idea camera wise what is good anymore. Thank you, I would love to get back into it. So many new landscapes to photograph, and with the ease of going into Europe it opens up even more.

What would be illegal here? You can own guns, but not handguns. I could easily go to a shooting range and shoot whatever I want. Fishing is big here. You can have knives on you as long as they’re not bigger than a 4 inch blade.

I should’ve just stayed in the states if I wanted that. I lived in one of the highest meth consuming counties per capita.

Leather working I think is something I could get behind.
If I remember correctly you are multilingual, what language would you suggest? I can read Spanish well, and speak it okay. I know a lot of phrases in German. I also speak a little Japanese.
I’d love to write a book, it was one of my dreams as a kid to be an author because I’m that exciting.
The Nordic hiking would be rather interesting I think.

I’ve been here about six months, and I left the US to study here.
I was going to wait and see if I like it here before deciding to stay or not, but I love it, and hope I can.
I live on the outskirts of London, but if I can stay here I plan on moving to the southern coast.
What did your daughter and SIL think about Wales? Why did they go?
I was a Brexit supporter initially, but with the way the last couple PMs and their respective governments have dealt with it, and from what I have learned about the EU, I now am against Brexit.
I think the fears of immigration need to be addressed, but are exaggerated by the media. Most of my mates are older than I am, but all but one agree with me.
Yes and No about Trump. He’s just presented as a foreign leader that may say dumb things, but the US is the UK’s only hope at a decent Brexit for trade deals.
Coronavirus is probably about the same, maybe a bit less here, from what I understand.
Please feel free to ask any questions you have.

My wife uses just an iron, but swears it’s the quality of the vinyl which keeps them from peeling the longest. Buy good vinyl.

I can’t do that yet. My visa doesn’t allow me to be self employed or run a business as a student.

I have a condition that makes things like yoga very difficult as my joints slip out. Do you have any suggestions for that?

Yoga is all about starting slow until you develop strength and agility. I’m a newbie myself and I’m sure I look goofy most of the time, but I’ve learned so much and my body is transforming itself with each class I take. I only do what I can do without it hurting. But I’m finding I can do way more than when I started two months ago!

Well the antenna size depends on what frequency you are wanting to talk on. I have a 145' antenna up in the trees and I also have a 2' antenna for talking locally while I'm mobile. There's always ways to change everything up.

Sailing would be a lot of fun! I love the water, and eventually want to move to the coast.
