Don't know if you play guitar, but if not, there's an app called Simply Guitar. It's free, easy to use, and interactive. I've owned a guitar for 10 years, never played a single note. I downloaded the app last week and my guitar knowledge it now 4/10. It's awesome.

Most of my hobbies are illegal in England.

I don’t think chickens are though, chickens are fun if you have a little space and don’t mind having to at least feed them everyday. Even in a neighborhood it’s possible, hens aren’t very loud. I would not have any roosters at all if I have neighbors nearby.

What would be illegal here? You can own guns, but not handguns. I could easily go to a shooting range and shoot whatever I want. Fishing is big here. You can have knives on you as long as they’re not bigger than a 4 inch blade.

HammerHead

90% of my gun hobby is handguns and “assault rifles” and my everyday pocket knives I rotate are 3+ inch blades and “switch blades” spring action side folders though not the stiletto type. But any auto knife can be bought as a manual usually.

Shooting for a hobby really should consist of more than just trigger pulling for it to be a proper hobby. Unless you’re just doing a lot of drill work, but that’s usually done with handguns/“assault style” weapons.

Long range shooting could be a good option for you if you have access to that kind of range. Reloading (ammo making) is good fun, and that can either be making lots of cheap ammo for plinking, or really accurate high quality stuff for long range shooting.

I reload also so I can shoot more, mainly pistol ammo and 1 speciality caliber that’s just too expensive to buy.

Depending on what you like, I recommend learning some new recipes! Cooking or baking or really anything. Being a girl I love to knit and sew and bake but I’m not sure about anyone else. I like volunteering, I find it very rewarding :))

Well the antenna size depends on what frequency you are wanting to talk on. I have a 145' antenna up in the trees and I also have a 2' antenna for talking locally while I'm mobile. There's always ways to change everything up.

Geo-cacheing

It’s where you “hunt” for things or solve virtual crimes using forms to find planted items. Some are social, where you can add stuff. Single people snd groups do it. Heard it’s a lot of fun, from the SOHers who do it. I’d like to try it too.

Leather working I think is something I could get behind.
If I remember correctly you are multilingual, what language would you suggest? I can read Spanish well, and speak it okay. I know a lot of phrases in German. I also speak a little Japanese.
I’d love to write a book, it was one of my dreams as a kid to be an author because I’m that exciting.
The Nordic hiking would be rather interesting I think.

Painting. Take a class at an art studio and see what you think. One of my great-nieces did this and found she loved it and has improved her own technique and how she “sees” things.

Dog training for persons that need medical-support companions.

Container gardening if you don’t have a yard.

Cooking - pick a type you like, French/Italian/Asian/African/etc etc and learn to perfect the style.

Get into magic. My little nephew likes to watch the Carbonaro effect on tv. So one day I bought a pack of magic sponge balls and learned how to manipulate them and make them disappear. I had fun learning and teaching that to my nephew. I even ordered more tricks to learn. It’s kinda fun to the smooth with your hands lol. Great to show off at parties and shorts and an ice breaker to talk with new people.

Can you draw? Practice drawing and painting. I’ve gotten quite good and can do quick sketches of people. I’ve even done a quick sketch at a resultant of my waiter on a napkin. They loved it. lol. Another fun thing to bust out and surprise people with is fun sketches.

Redo things. Go to garage sales and pick up an old bike or an old table or something to redo. Get artsy and craft and have fun redoing things.

If physically capable and if you have the time take up Thru Hiking. Challenging, invigorating to the mind and body, allows you to see a lot of the country few people ever really see and we’ve thousands of miles of blazed trails to hike. The gear isn’t expensive, under $800 dollars I spent on the gear I’ll take to Trail this year and it’s the same gear I’ve carried on more than 3000 miles of trekking so far.

That would be incredible as I love doing small day trips for hikes and nature walks. As of right now I don’t have the time to do that, but it’s something I’d love to get prepare for and do within a couple of years.

I’m only able to because I’m on disability, lame in a leg and walk with a cane/trekking poles. I do move thru the woods like I used to but still enjoy it. Years ago I could do 15-20 miles a day easily. Today 10-12 would be the max. Years ago I was only free during winter months to hike, some nasty conditions then.

There are real good entry level packages from Nikon or Canon @600 usd, they come with 2 or 3 lenses. I would also recommend the Photoshop Elements, it normally @$100 usd

I will have to look into it. I have no idea camera wise what is good anymore. Thank you, I would love to get back into it. So many new landscapes to photograph, and with the ease of going into Europe it opens up even more.

Wood working or travel from the list would definitely be things I could get interested in rather quickly. I love traveling, and while I have the money now, it would not be sustainable. I had a friend offer to teach me how to do blacksmithing, and another to weld. Woodworking sounds very good too, definitely something to look into. Thank you for your answer!

4JC Christian Pastors Wife
02/29/20 3:38 pm

Those sound like great options! I hadn’t thought about blacksmithing or welding. Both of those could be lucrative as well as a hobby! More so welding, because welders get paid good money, but blacksmithing if you have a historical site nearby that does demonstrations. We’ve been to some of those and it’s fun to watch!

Woodworking can be very lucrative, also, and could be something you do on the side. We’ve lived in a couple of pastoriums (church owned homes) that had GORGEOUS floor to ceiling cabinets, under stove drawers for pots and pans, and wooden pass throughs to dens or dining rooms.

If you have the option of free lessons from a friend, that would definitely cut down on your costs!

You’re very welcome! I fall into that needlework list! 😂🤣😂 I’ve also done some crafts.

4JC Christian Pastors Wife

You’re certainly welcome!

Now I have a million questions! 😂🤣😂

How long have you been there, and why did you leave the US? Are you intending on gaining citizenship, or is this short term? Do you care to share where in the UK? I have a daughter and SIL that visited Wales recently.

How do you feel about Brexit?
Is the immigration problem as bad as it sounds, with countries losing their identities?
Is the media there as derogatory toward Trump as it is here?
Is the coronavirus taking more hold there than it is here?

..

I hear you like woodworking, UKGuy. I enjoy making wooden rings sometimes. The only thing that stops me is cost, since I don't own a wood lathe not have the money for one. I've been turning rings on a drill press, which works, bust isn't ideal for this type of work. I'm sure you can find a good lathe for under $500, though.

UKGuy
03/01/20 4:01 am

I’ve been here about six months, and I left the US to study here.
I was going to wait and see if I like it here before deciding to stay or not, but I love it, and hope I can.
I live on the outskirts of London, but if I can stay here I plan on moving to the southern coast.
What did your daughter and SIL think about Wales? Why did they go?
I was a Brexit supporter initially, but with the way the last couple PMs and their respective governments have dealt with it, and from what I have learned about the EU, I now am against Brexit.
I think the fears of immigration need to be addressed, but are exaggerated by the media. Most of my mates are older than I am, but all but one agree with me.
Yes and No about Trump. He’s just presented as a foreign leader that may say dumb things, but the US is the UK’s only hope at a decent Brexit for trade deals.
Coronavirus is probably about the same, maybe a bit less here, from what I understand.
Please feel free to ask any questions you have.

Thanks for answering all my questions!

They LOVED it, and went for my SIL’s best friend’s wedding. They had never met in person!

Dems here claim that people all over the world hate Trump as much as they do, and that the media is as negative as they are here. It doesn’t sound like it, from your answer! 😂🤣😂 Here, some Dems believe that he’s worse that terrorists and historical dictators!

Looking forward to getting to know you more!
